Some people claim that music, video games, television programs, and films that depict violence, promiscuity, unethical behavior, and drug use may encourage young people to engage in those behaviors.
Compare this to films, books, or cartoons from before the 1980s that depicted objectionable actions or behavior. How much do media portrayals of these topics influence behavior? Do young people respond differently to these topics when they are presented in print, electronic, or digital media?
In September 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed in a way that offended and angered many people. Some people described the cartoons as racist, whereas others defended the publication as an exercise of free speech. What is your opinion? What is the responsibility of media when considering the publication of offensive material? Should the government have any influence?
