medium to another has many problems and too often important points
are lost, but making a story interesting for contemporary audiences is

Assume you are an experienced animator, story creator and character designer
with a mind full of fantasy ideas. You are asked by a producer to choose a classic
fairytale for a proposed feature film. This means you will have to read the Grimm’s tales
and check out existing films. Contrary to popular belief, Disney only made a few
fairytale features. This includes Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping
Beauty, The Little Mermaid, actually an original tale by Hans Christian Andersen. There
is also Aladdin, from the Arabian Knights stories and Frozen inspired by another
Andersen tale, The Snow Queen. The first thing you will become aware of is that the
classic stories have been changed in many ways in the movie productions. Characters are
left out and the plots are altered ruthlessly. The films are often musicals with comedy
situations. For instance, in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The little men have a.
distinctive personalities and serve as comedy relief. In the original Grimm tale the
dwarfs are seen as a group, and not as individual characters with names. The original
story didn’t include them in the title, but simply Snow White, or in the Grimm’s version as
Snow-drop. Each film contains extreme variations from its literary sources. Usually just
enough remains of the story’s core to earn the benefit of the original title. Disney’s
Sleeping Beauty, for instance, leaves out a unique plot device that made the classic tale
