Six Sigma as a Quality Management Tool
Introduction
Six Sigma as a quality management tool was originally developed as a quality management and assessment tool for implementation in different businesses and industries. As such the six sigma methodology was originally developed for cost reduction, eliminate defects and minimize variability during processing. It has five steps which are definition, measurement, analysis, improvement and control. Because of the universality of the steps, sigma six can be applied in any industry including the health sector. After completing the Sigma methodology, one gets the numerical value of sigma which is a reflection of the frequency of errors within a process2. Therefore, the higher the value of sigma, the less likely that there will be false results. Clinical laboratory are very essential and important to healthcare services because many decisions made by physicians are based on laboratory results. During the mid 1990s, it was estimated that more people or patients died due to medical errors more than AIDS or cancer in USA1, 3.
