The Shopping Trip
Now that you know something about the hardware components of a computer, your
group will get the opportunity to use that knowledge to compete for cash and
valuable prizes! Well, maybe not cash and prizes, but you will get the respect and
admiration of the rest of the class.
Your group’s mission is to pick out just the right computer equipment to solve the
problems which your hypothetical organization faces.
The Problem:
Your group is the hardware selection committee for your organization. You have
been given the job of selecting and purchasing computers for your department. In
order to accomplish this you have been given the catalog for the approved vendor
from which you can purchase. To better understand your choices you must identify
the computer which you believe to have the best overall performance with the
features listed below.
Your computer will be primarily used to process large databases and produce
voluminous reports on a weekly basis.
All of the computers in your department will be used to manage large databases —
this application will require that the computers have:
• The largest and fastest available hard disk
• The fastest available with at least 4 cores CPU
• A minimum of 16 gigabytes of RAM
• A minimum of a 22″ monitor with .24 or better dot pitch
• HINT: look for a dot pitch calculator, not all monitors list dot pitch or
pixel pitch. Dot pitch is a function of Max resolution and monitor
size in inches
• A printer (12 PPM /600 DPI Minimum) that you believe will be the best for
the task.
• An appropriate backup device(s) to protect the data in the event of
hardware failure or physical disaster. (You decide the backup method)
Make a power-point presentation. For each part make an individual slide with the
following information:
1. Part type
2. The performance specification we use to evaluate the part
3. The vendor with link to part you chose
4. The price of the part
5. A picture of the actual part chosen
Note: You are building this system from scratch not searching Dell, IBM, Apple,
etc. for a pre-made computer made with the specifications I required. Therefore
