The topic I chose to talk about is asthma. I have had asthma my entire life so I know first hand of what it is like to have an asthma attack and be prepared for the next one. I found it interesting after reading the power point that asthma actually makes up for one-third of childhood diseases commonly found more on boys rather than girls and is found more in places of poverty and after being exposed to second hand smoke.(Cole , 2017, School Age Power Point- Physical Development) There are no cures for asthma at the moment but there are treatments patients may follow as stated by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, “The goal of asthma management is to achieve control with an asthma action plan. An asthma action plan may include monitoring, avoiding triggers, and using medicines.”(The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, 2014) Another article also by Medline Plus goes on to say, “Asthma is treated with two kinds of medicines: quick-relief medicines to stop asthma symptoms and long-term control medicines to prevent symptoms.”( Medline Plus, 2019) Asthma is a chronic disease that may be fatal but can be controlled if handled properly.
