Robert King Merton (1938) advanced a criminology theory known as the strain theory. This theory postulates that it is the social structures within the society which move citizens into committing crimes. Nevertheless, it must be remembered that this Strain Theory has its genesis in Emile Durkheims work, so that it was subsequently worked on by Merton, Albert K. Cohen, Robert Agnew, Lloyd Ohlin and Richard Cloward. The theory has it that the structural strain imposes processes at the societal level so that this filters down the manner in which individuals needs are perceived. This means that in the presence of ineffective social structures and ineffective regulation, individuals perception may be changed. Secondly, the strain theory may also take on an individual form, so that the pains and frictions that are experienced by the individual compel the same individual to seek ways to satisfy his needs.
Structurally, the strain theory has it that an unequal society that is too capitalistic may compel an individual to start trafficking drugs [methamphetamines], thereby also encouraging their (ab)use. Individually, it is the pains, frictions and the vagaries of life that may motivate an individual to start dabbling in drugs such as methamphetamines
