How Culture Affect Food?
Culture is one of the factors that affect the consumption of food. Fundamentally, cultural
impacts result in the difference in the typical consumption of particular foods and aspects of
preparation. Individuals can connect with others through related food patterns. For instance,
members of a particular ethnic group use food as a way of connecting with others and preserving
their cultural identity. Many researchers have conducted studies on the relationship between
culture and food and how the former influences the latter.
In their article, Cultural values affect functional food perception, Neupane, Chimhundu &
Chan, (2019) examine how cultural tradition influence food perception. The research question is:
what is the link between consumers’ cultural beliefs and their functional food opinion? This
qualitative research utilizes the grounded theory methodology to assess the data. The researchers
used in-depth interviews to collect the data from the participants, who included Chinese, AngloAustralian, and Indians in Australia. To analyze the data, the constant comparative data analysis
technique was used. After a comprehensive research analysis, the researchers found that indeed
there is a connection between cultural beliefs and consumers’ food perception. Neupane,
Chimhundu & Chan, (2019) further established that functional food attitude relies on the
consumers’ inclination towards their beliefs, culture, their intentions for functional food intake
and the degree of resolution towards functional foods.
This research is qualitative and is centered on three ethnic groups, thus limiting its ability
to represent the entire population. This article provides insights and ideas that will assist me

during the development of interview questions for the final project. For instance, I can use this
research question as one of the interview questions for my project. Furthermore, the limitations
of this research can shape the directions of future studies. This article can also enable me to
determine how marketers and food producers can analyze the types of cultural values of their
target market when developing marketing techniques. This article will play a crucial role during
my final project because it provides the required information regarding the influences of culture
on food consumption (Neupane, Chimhundu & Chan, 2019).
In their article, Cultural and social influences on food consumption in Dutch residents of
Turkish and Moroccan origin, Nicolaou et al. (2009) investigate how social and cultural aspects
influence food intake. Typically, the goal of this study is to examine the cultural and social
impacts on food consumption in two groups- Dutch residents of Moroccan and Turkish cultural
backgrounds. The researchers were concerned about the effect of the traditional culture and its
significance within the perspective of migration and related changes in the socio-cultural and
economic setting as well as acculturation. The study was qualitative in nature and utilized a focus
group discussion as a data collection method. The focus groups, as mentioned, were young
people of Moroccan and Turkish origin. Data from the participants were documented and
assessed by utilizing framework analysis (Nicolaou et al. 2009).
After extensive research, the researchers found that a leading aspect that arose is
hospitality, and the key function is food. Hospitality is centered on the religions and cultural
beliefs of both groups. Other aspects that arose in the study were migration, cultural identity, and
lifestyle transformation. Nicolaou et al. (2009), therefore, concluded that among the two groups,
the key function of food in culture combine with the transformations that occur due to migration
establish a setting of abundance that can result in overeating, consequently affecting energy and
3
possibility of being overweight. The findings of this research will provide information that can
be used during the development of interview questions for the final project. With information
from this article, I can come up with points regarding the implications of this study. In other
words, this article will assist me with relevant data that will be used for my final project
(Nicolaou et al. 2009).
