PSYC 43CS UIW Mental Effects of Diabetes on Adolescents Research Paper I need a 20 page paper written on “A qualitative study on diabetes and how it affects the mental health of adolescents.” I have attached the format, and two of my proposals that have instructor feedback. These must be used in the paper. On the week five proposal, I have the references in there that I must use in my paper. These peer review journals need to be used. If you cannot access them, I can go in a pull them and give you them in a PDF form. PSYC 43CS

Qualitative Study on how Type 1 Diabetes affects the mental state of our youth.
Jordan Valderaz
University of the Incarnate Word
Significance of the Study:
Diabetes in children has become a National pandemic that people do not tend to talk about.
While we know that Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) can affect the body (i.e. glucose levels, eye sight, loss
of limbs, and death) what we dont truly explore is the mental affect that this disease has on our
young children/adolescents. T1D has the ability to cause distress, depression, anxiety, and brought
on disordered eating (reference needs to be provided for this sentence). This study would provide
an insight into the minds of adolescents whom are currently living with the disease. By getting
into the minds of those who are already living with it, its possible that we can create a treatment
plan for newly diagnosed patients. Great start, a good significance section develops the importance
of the study as a topic. It elaborates on the purpose. Build on what you have by justifying the study
beyond the desire to do the research. Valid reasons my include a lack of similar studies, the needs
of the various publics that would be impacted if you were to conduct the study.

Assumptions:
T1D can cause mood like disorders which can lead to depression and possible suicidal ideations.
What we hope to gain from this study is an insight into the minds of those who already have
T1D. We can assume that we can provide a pre-treatment plan for those who are early diagnosed
so that they dont have to succumb to the thoughts in their own mind. T1D for many is a life
ending disease, however, we can teach them how to cope with their newly diagnosed disease.
Good start but you must build this section a bit. Two types of assumptions must be addressed in
this section, ideological and procedural. Ideological are directly related to personal beliefs (e.g., a
researcher conducting research on low income housing and its impact may assume that suffering
exists in low income housing settings). Procedural deals with the kinds of data gathering and data
analysis that are appropriate to the study.
Scope and Limitations:
The limitations to this particular study will be the ages of my participants. I want to focus on
adolescent/youth between the ages of nine and 16. While this is a very broad age group, I have
chosen this range because it can give a variety of insight into the problems this disorder can cause.
Another limitation is the face that because this is such a sensitive issue for people, the younger
participants may not want divulge such information. With the ages of the children will come
consent forms from both the participant and their parent. It is possible that the parent may not want
their children to participate. Very nice, be sure to address the specific aspects of the study that will
not be included (e.g., the proposed study will deal only with aspects A and B of the total problem);
you must also include design methodological limitations such as: design, sampling,
instrumentation and data analyses.

Week Four Mock Research Proposal Update: (25 pts.).
Develop a one or two-page update and submit by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. CST.
Provide the following:
Working title: Qualitative study on the mental affects diabetes has on adolescents. Great start,
title may evolve as your project evolves.
Statement of the problem: Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) has become an increasingly prevalent
illness in children and teens. Approximately 175,000 youth live with T1D in the United States,
with 13,000 new cases being diagnosed each year (Ye et al., 2017). Studies have shown that most
parents dont even notice the signs of their child being T1D before its too late and theyre in an
Intensive Care Unit (ICU) (requires a reference). Good beginning you simply need to refine the
language a bit. During the identification of the research problem, it is important to identify a
problem that will benefit the individuals being studied (Creswell, 2014). Well defined, it becomes
clear that the project addresses a problem.
Creswell, J. W. (2014). Research design: Qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods
approaches (4th ed.). Sage.
Background of the study: This study is important because (rewrite the beginning of this
sentence) many adolescents show signs and symptoms of having diabetes before theyre even
diagnosed. However, most (find a different word) parents never notice the signs until it is too late
and the pancreas has shut down completely. According to the Mayo Clinic (2020), one of the
symptoms of T1D is irritability or behavior changes. However, many people just attribute it to
the child being stubborn or a brat. Also, many times, once a T1D diagnosis occurs children tend
to become depressed and may feel helpless. It is possible that if they receive therapeutic care in
the form of psychology so that they can learn how to cope with their new diagnosis. It does not
mean that their life is over, it just means they must change the narrative and adapt. Great start,
simply build on it, here is where you elaborate on why the problem is of pressing concern or
theoretical interest.
Purpose of the study: This study should be conducted in order to determine the common
signs that have been observed in children who are T1D. Therefore, being able to get the child into
a doctor to get tested before they end up in a worse situation (i.e. ICU, Diabetic Ketoacidosis
(DKA), or death)). Furthermore, it should be known how to treat a child who suffer with T1D so
that they can learn coping skills and learn how to move forward form such a diagnosis. The purpose
should be to teach the child how to be resilient in a time when that doesnt feel possible. Great
start; rewrite the underlined portion of the first sentence.
Research hypothesis/question(s):
1. Does T1D have a negative impact on a childs mental well-being?
2. Is it possible to tell a child has T1D based off their mental state before they have to reach the
level of DKA? Rewrite this question, in its current form it could easily be viewed as a yes or no
question.
Nature of the study: This study would be a qualitative study. I would use focus groups with
children/youth ranging from five years of age to 17 years of age. As studies have suggested, T1D
can be diagnosed at all stages of life. By using focuses groups with these age groups, I would be
able to get a very broad sense of the subjects mental state before, during, and after their initial
T1D diagnosis. Did they notice changes in their behavior? Did they tend to find themselves more
depressed? Very good start, you will elaborate on the specific qualitative methodology in a later
section of the project.
Definition of terms:
Diabetes: Diabetes is a serious condition that causes higher than normal blood sugar levels.
Diabetes occurs when your body cannot make or effectively use its own insulin, a hormone made
by special cells in the pancreas called islets (eye-lets). Insulin serves as a key to open your
cells, to allow the glucose to enter — and allow you to use the glucose for energy.
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA): A life-threatening problem that affects people with diabetes. It
occurs when the body starts breaking down fat at a rate that is much too fast. The liver processes
the fat into a fuel called ketones, which causes the blood to become acidic.
Illness: A disease of period of sickness affecting the body or mind. Dont think you need this
one.
Adolescents: The period of transition between childhood and adulthood. It includes some big
changesto the body, and to the way a young person relates to the world correct it to match the
ages you have identified in the Nature of the Study section.
Mental: Relating to the mind or disorders of the mind. Be more specific
Affects: Have an effect on; make a different to. Dont think you need this one.
Skills: The expertise or talent to do a job or task. Be more specific.
Coping: To face and deal with responsibilities, problems, or difficulties, especially successfully
or in a calm or adequate manner:
Impact: Have a strong effect on someone or something. Dont think you need this one.
Pancreas: A large gland behind the stomach which secretes digestive enzymes into the
duodenum. Embedded in the pancreas are the islets of Langerhans, which secrete into the blood
the hormones insulin and glucagon
Operational definitions statement: This research will consist of interview questions that I
would administer to the subjects in the form of a written questionnaire. This would give each
subject the opportunity to be candid in their response while taking their time on each one.
Questions would be response questions rather than a basic Yes or No answer. For example:
Have you noticed any sudden changes in your mood? Great beginning!
