Properties and Formulation of Pharmaceutic als
Question #1
Radiation in physics has been defined as a situation whereby the energetic particles, energy or wave travels through space or a medium. There are two different types of radiations which include ionization and non ionization radiation. Usually, the term radiation is used o mean ionization radiation. Subsequently, ionization radiation is defined as a radiation with enough energy to remove an electron from an atom or a molecule. There are different types of ionization radiations with the common ones being gamma rays, alpha radiations and X-rays. These waves have both positive and negative uses and effects on different types of materials. However, this paper only seeks to show the effects of ionization radiation on polymers. A polymer is a macromolecule that is composed mainly of repeated structural units that are bonded together by covalent bonds. The long chains are not necessarily synthetic but also natural polymers exist.
Having this definitions in mind, one is thus in a good position to understand the effects of ionization radiation on these polymers. It is worth mentioning that irradiation has a propensity not only of breaking down the long polymeric chains but also in changing the natural appearance and properties of the polymers. For instance, it is notable that radiations, Gamma, affect the transparency of styrene, a polymer, in a discoloration process (Kausch & Anjum, 2003).
