In a survey of 715 hospitals conducted in spring 2001by the American Hospital Association, there was an indication of a serious nursing shortage, were as many as 126,000 unfilled registered nursing positions nationwide. The shortage is expected to reach serious proportions by 2010 when the gap will widen between the supply of and the requirement for registered nurses. Authorities believe that the current shortage is not like previous shortages and that extraordinary means will need to be taken to reverse it (Feldman, 2003).
