Question: Revolutions are complex political events that are difficult to predict and explain their occurrence. Theda Skocpol in her State and Social Revolutions attempted to explain why revolutions occur. What was Skocpol’s argument regarding the occurrence and the nature of social revolutions? Having now become experts on Mexico and Venezuela, and with insights into the Cultural Revolution in China and our own American Revolution, do you think Skocpol is correct about revolutions? Why or why not?

Assignment Instructions: To do well on this exam you must answer the questions asked in the prompt (for example, did the student identify and clearly describe Skocpol’s argument). Furthermore, I will be looking for a clear thesis statement in the opening paragraph(s), and evidence that the student has read the readings in the class on authoritarianism, political transitions, and revolutions. A successful exam will include citations and evidence from the readings to support the students arguments. The paper should be about four to five pages, double-space (this does not include the students name at the top of the page) with proper margins. Papers should have page numbers. No bibliography is necessary, but you do need to cite. If you are quoting from the lecture, you can cite that as follows (Crespo, lecture, topic).
