For this experiment we will be using online simulation experiments. We will NOT use the lab
pages in your lab book; for SCCC students this experiment is very similar to the one in your lab
manual on page 55, which you could read through for more information on this subject.
PART 1: Calculating friction using an incline plane
An inclined plane is used to determine the coefficient of static friction ; when the incline angle
is large enough the block will begin to slide. According to the theory the coefficient of static
friction is equal to the tangent of the angle at which the block starts to slide:
tan =
First watch this video describing static friction on the incline plane and the physics behind it:
7 minutes:

Next run the experimental simulation: go to this weblink and press “BEGIN.” You should see a
page that looks like the figure below:
https://www.thephysicsaviary.com/Physics/Programs/Labs/ForcesOnInclineLab/
When you are ready to change the mass of the block, and/or the coefficient of friction, do so by
clicking the arrows in the upper right of the page as shown.
For the first experiment set the coefficient of static friction s to 0.39.
Set the mass of the block as shown in the table below.
Press the “click to change angle”
Press the same button “Click to Freeze Angle” when the block starts sliding down the
incline.
5. In this table record the angle at which the block starts sliding down the incline:

Answer these questions:
1. Looking at the data in the table does = ?
2. Does the mass of the block affect the angle at which the block begins to slides down (yes or
no)? Explain why you concluded that answer:
Next, repeat the experiment using a different value for the coefficient of friction:
s = ___________

Part 2: Measuring static and kinetic friction using a force gauge
For this experiment we will measure the coefficients of static and kinetic friction between sliding
surfaces, by applying a pull force, and using a force gauge to measure the strength of the pull
force.
According to the theory the static friction increases from 0 to a maximum value preventing the
pull force from pulling the block; it won’t start to slide until the force pulling it Fpull just begins
to exceed the maximum force of static friction FS between the block and the surface it is on:
FPull = =
Once the block is moving a force of kinetic friction Fk exists between the sliding block and the
surface impeding it from sliding freely; Fk is always less than the maximum static force FS. The
pull force can now be reduced until the velocity of the block becomes constant, and we know
from Newton’s 2nd Law that at that point Fpull = Fk

Here is a video describing friction for a sliding object and the physics behind it:
5 minutes:

For this experiment we will be using the simulation experiment at this website; click on the
following link and press “BEGIN”
https://www.thephysicsaviary.com/Physics/Programs/Labs/ForceFriction/
You should see a page that looks like the figure below
You can adjust the mass of the block by pressing the arrows on top. You can also adjust the type
of surface by clicking on the upper-left of the page.
When you press the “Start” button the force pulling the block will begin to increase. The data
will be recorded on the graph.
In the above graph over the first two seconds the increasing strength of the pull force equals the
increasing static friction force; right before 2.5 seconds the block breaks free and begins to
move; the pull force is quickly reduced to 3.5N so that the block slides at a constant velocity, and
by Newton’s 2nd Law we know the force of kinetic friction must equal the pull force
Fill out the data table below:
1. Choose a material on material to run the simulation experiment:

Pick a different mass for each trial
Press “Start”
Record from the graph the force needed to start the block moving.
Record from the graph the force needed to keep the block moving at a constant velocity
once it starts moving.
6. Using the formulas above calculate the coefficients of static friction and kinetic frictio
