Find a primary source on the internet or in a book about your topic.

– It cannot be a quote or just a few sentences. It needs to be a full source – like the full speech or letter – that was created back in the period when your topic took place.

– For example: Abolitionist Sarah Grimke came to believe women, like the slaves, needed more freedom and wrote a public letter about that in 1838. It is a primary source for 1838 and was one of the first calls for women’s rights in the U.S.

– ANOTHER EXAMPLE: if your topic is the Civil War, you need to decide what, specifically, interests you about the war. Then find a speech, letter, or news report about it. These things can be found online, and the page in this module teaches you how to do that.
