• The career I am interested in is the legal profession. Growing up I have always like the idea of defending people in a court of law, especially those that have no one else in their corner.
• There are so many fields for lawyers to choose from, like medical law, real estate law, tax law, patent law, etc., the opportunities are endless. Some lawyers choose to work in law firms while others work in the private filed, some can also work as in-house counsel for companies. Prosecutors work for the government; they prosecute those accused of committing crimes. Lawyers educate their clients of their rights under the law. They help them make the best possible choice. Lawyers have to undergo extensive training; they have to first obtain their bachelor’s degree in whatever field they want and then go to law school where they spend an average of 3 years learning the law. After that, they must take the bar exam to get their license. According to the bureau of labor, employment for lawyers is expected to grow about 4 percent over the next 10 years. The average earning for lawyers varies depending on what field of law they practice in. real estate attorneys have an average salary of 120 thousand, for prosecutors it is 75 thousand. Salaries for lawyers also vary form state and city. Lawyers who live in big cities like New York and Los Angeles tend to have higher salaries.
• A sociological phenomena that would come up is that of race, the justice system has not always been kind to people of color in the past, they get overlooked and exploited a lots
• I have always admired lawyers and the power they have, being extremely thorough with research and investigations, being up to date with the latest laws in their chosen fields and just all around being in control. Some lawyers, like public defenders, help those who cannot afford lawyers in the court of law. I relate to that so much because I like being thorough and concise, I also like helping those that have no one else. I think I would love being a public defender. I believe everyone is entitled to lawyer regardless of their crimes.
• I think one the of the ways I can better prepare myself is by reading. Lawyers read a lot. Books, laws, law journals etc., they spend a lot their time just reading. Another step I can take is by interning at a law firm or one of the government’s law department like the public defender’s office. It would be really helpful to watch lawyers practice and also help with document preparation or any other task.
• One of the resources that has been helpful to me is the handshake app, it lets me know of internships available at law firms across the city. I like it because it caters to students in college.
