Not ideas about the thing but the thing itself and Muffin of Sunsets analysis Compare two of the poems that we’ve read, showing how they’re either similar or different. In so doing, use the comparison you’re making to show new ideas about the two poems. A sample thesis might look like:a. “Although Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s ‘How Do I Love Thee’ and John Keats’ ‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’ appear to have little in common, in reality both poems make arguments about the nature of time.” Paper One: Poetry Interpretation, English 102 (McNulty)
Date Due:
Sunday, 3/3, 11:59 PM
Directions:
In 3-5(ish) pages, write a thoughtful, detailed essay on one off the topics listed below. You
should make sure that your paper has a solid thesis statement and uses each of its body
paragraphs to develop, sustain and prove that thesis.
Possible Topics:
1. Compare two of the poems that we’ve read, showing how they’re either similar or
different. In so doing, use the comparison you’re making to show new ideas about the
two poems. A sample thesis might look like:
a. “Although Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s ‘How Do I Love Thee’ and John Keats’
‘Ode on a Grecian Urn’ appear to have little in common, in reality both poems
make arguments about the nature of time.”
2. Do what we’ve been doing in class and create a full-fledged close-reading of a section of
a poem (or an entire short poem) that we’ve read for this class. Walk though each line of
the poem and clearly demonstrate what that line means in the larger context of what you
think the poem means. You will need to generate distinct literal and figurative readings.
3. Got other ideas? Good! Just ask me, and if I OK it, do that instead. I’m flexible, but
remember: the intent of this assignment is interpretation, not research.
Recommended Topic:
1. Expand your one page paper into an effective and thorough 3-5 page argument. Keep
your thesis, but add more evidence by expanding your focus from just a few lines to
something broader (an entire stanza, section, or poem). Make sure you have ample
evidence and a wealth of specific analysis.
Remember: Success on a one page paper does not guarantee success on a longer paper.
A lot can go right or wrong as you expand!
All papers should be proofread carefully and should be mostly error free upon submission.
All papers should feature proper MLA citation. If you have questions as you go along, or
would like to discuss a potential thesis, please email me on BlackBoard or at
tmcnulty@mxcc.edu.
I can’t review entire drafts of papers before the due date, but I can review paragraphs or
answer specific questions about your draft!
