4.1 Opening Applications from the
Start Screen
In this lesson, you will learn how to launch an application.
T
hus far, we have been concentrating on the Windows Operating System. In this
lesson, we’ll begin be working with applications. Applications provide the tools
you need to get your work done. Some typical applications you may work with
include word processing programs, spreadsheet programs, presentation
programs, image editing programs, Web browsers and HTML editors, just to name a few.
Applications list on the Start Menu
There are two types of applications that you will work with: applications designed
specifically for the Windows 10 interface and legacy applications. Legacy applications
typically contain such components as a menu bar and toolbars. Applications designed for
the Windows 10 interface do not contain these components and typically take up your
entire screen. We will work with both types of applications in this chapter.
Every desktop application you work with will be a little different, but the method for
doing certain tasks is the same in most programs. For instance, the process for opening a
document from within an application is usually the same across all applications.

The most common way to launch an application is from the Start screen. Many
applications designed for the new Windows 10 UI (user interface) will contain an
associated tile on the Start screen. Click the tile to launch the application. If the
application you wish to open is not listed, click the All Apps link on the bottom of the
Start menu. A new screen displays, listing all of your applications in alphabetical order.
By far the quickest way to find and launch applications is by using the Search box. Press
the Windows key and begin typing the name for the app that you wish to find. As you
type, matches appear on the left side of your screen. Click the icon for the app you want
to launch or press the Enter key when the desired app is highlighted.
If you have a shortcut to an application on your Desktop or in another folder, doubleclick the application icon to launch the program.

4.2 Switching Between Programs
In this lesson, you will learn how to switch between open programs.
T
he power of Windows lies in its ability to have several program windows open
simultaneously. We’ve already seen that you can have more than one open
window. Likewise, you can have more than one application running at a time.
After you launch an application, a button representing the program appears on the
Taskbar. To switch from one open application to another, click the application’s icon
on the Taskbar.
You can also cycle through all open windows by pressing and holding down the Alt
key, and then pressing the Tab key. Continue pressing the Tab key until the
window to which you want to switch is selected. Release the Alt key.

4.3 Opening and Closing a Document
In this lesson, you will learn how open and close an existing document.
A
pplication windows contain many of the same components as file windows with
which we’ve been working thus far. Many application windows contain three
main components: a menu bar, a toolbar and the working area. Similar to
the latest Microsoft Office applications, WordPad contains the Ribbon above
the working area (rather than a menu bar or toolbars). The Ribbon in WordPad contains
three tabs: File, Home and View. The File tab contains commands relevant to file
operations, such as opening, savings and printing. The Home tab displays commands
relevant to editing and formatting your documents whereas the View tab contains
commands that allow you to modify how you view your document.
The working area is the component of your application where you enter, modify, and
format data.
Many of the commands you find in WordPad are standard across most applications. One
of these standard commands is the Open command, located under the File tab on the
Ribbon. This command allows you to navigate through your computer’s hard drive until
you find the document or file you wish to display in the active application. The file will
then be displayed in the application’s working area. This command is equivalent to the
File > Open command found in other applications.

Double-clicking a document in a file window will open that document in the
application with which it is associated.
To close a WordPad document, click the File tab on the Ribbon and choose Exit
from the menu. In other applications, select File > Close or File > Exit from the
menu. If the application allows you to open more than one document window, as
does Microsoft Word for example, the File > Close command will close only the
active document but leave the application open. WordPad only allows you to open
one document window per session. Thus, the Exit command closes both the
document and the application.
Depending on the application, there may also be an Open icon on the Application
toolbar. Below is a standard Open icon in many Windows applications.
The Open Icon
Note: In newer versions of Microsoft Office applications, the Menu Bar and
Toolbar have been replaced by the Ribbon. Click on a tab on the Ribbon to
access application commands.

4.4 Entering and Editing Text in
WordPad
In this lesson, you will learn how to enter text into a blank WordPad document.
T
here are several free programs that come with Windows 10. One of these is the
WordPad application which is used to create text documents. WordPad is a
mini word processing program that allows you to enter, edit, delete and format
text.
The WordPad Application
WordPad allows you to save your documents either as a plain text document (.txt) or as a
rich text format document (.rtf), both of which can be opened by a variety of word
processing programs.
When WordPad first launches, a new blank document is displayed and the insertion point
(the location where you begin entering text) is located at the top left of the document. So
you can just begin typing text into your blank document. As you type, the text
automatically wraps to the next line. To insert a new blank line, press the Enter key.
To add text to an existing document, move your mouse pointer to the location where
you wish to begin typing and then click your left mouse button. This will set the insertion
point at the new location.

4.5 Selecting Text
In this lesson, you will learn how to select text in a document.
I
n the last lesson, we saw how to delete one character at a time from a document.
However, often you will want to delete, copy, move or apply formatting changes to
an entire word, sentence or paragraph. In order to do this, you must first select the
text you wish to delete.
Once the text is selected, you can quickly replace the selected text by simply typing in new
text. This action automatically deletes the highlighted text and replaces it with what you
have typed.
Selected Text
To select a block of text, place the insertion point at the beginning or end of the block
that you wish to select. Click and hold down the left mouse button and drag until the text
is highlighted in black.
There are many other ways to select blocks of text. For instance, in many applications
you can select a word by double-clicking it. The table below outlines several techniques
you can use to select text in a document in WordPad.
