A 16-year-old 10^th-grade student comes into the gynecologist’s office for a discussion of contraception. She reports that she has initiated sexual activity for the first time over the past 3 months. She has a single male partner, and she has been using condoms (most of the time). There are a lot of things that we need to discuss with this adolescent – contraception, being one, and a variety of other risky behaviors: alcohol, smoking, etc. However, the purpose now is to think in the context of her life and HPV.

Consider the following before you answer the questions below:

• What is her risk of acquiring HPV?
• What factors influence the likelihood that she will acquire it?
• What are the consequences if she does get it?
• What are the chances it will go away on its own?
• What screening is indicated?
• What are we doing prevention?

Questions:

• Provide any other concerns you have for this patient.

• What diagnostic tests do you recommend?

• What type of contraception will you recommend?

• What other topics might you discuss with her at this visit? Any follow-up?
