Discussion: Multiple choice exams

The purpose of doing a test analysis is to identify and change test items which are not performing well and to identify objectives which students did not learn and which will need to be re-taught and re-assessed. It is also important to identify questions that were confusing/worded poorly.

Review the results of a multiple choice assessment that you have used or designed. If you do not have access to an exam currently, interview your cooperating teacher about a multiple choice test he or she has recently utilized, and then how he or she modified it. Identify a multiple choice question that students had difficulty with and suggest revisions based on the best practices discussed in McMillan, Chapter 7. Comment on/ analyze your classmates questions as well.

In each discussion you are expected to provide one original post within the first week that the discussion is open, and then respond to a minimum 4-5 thoughtful and timely posts are in the A range.

Discussion: Standardized Assessments in your Discipline

Review the assessment materials that you have collected within your discipline over the course of the semester. Consider the state assessments for the courses that you teach (e.g. Regents Exams, 3-8 Math or ELA) because even if you do not teach the particular level at which the exam is given, your course might lead to the state assessment. Choose one assessment to focus on.

After reviewing the assessment and scoring rubrics, grading procedures, etc., share a brief analysis of the test. Focus on ONE of the following areas:

• the kind of knowledge the test evaluates (focusing on validity), OR
• potential areas of difficulty for students
