MLA style governs both the formatting of your writing (such as margins, font size, line spacing, indentation, and the way your references look in your text), as well as your list of references that needs to follow your academic writing. In English, we call this the works cited. In the sciences, you might know this as your reference list or your bibliography.

In this assignment, you have to find a selection of different sources available online. Once you find the source, you need to give the information appropriate for an MLA style works cited AND in the proper formatting. You can use OWL Purdue to help you with this (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_general_format.html, see: “MLA Works Cited Page” entries), as well as our eClass PowerPoint.

For text materials, most of the information that you need (publishing company, year of publication, page range) will be available on the first few pages of a book (even in ebooks). Online library resources often also provide the information on the summary page before you access the actual book.

Note: You need to use the 8th edition of the MLA style guide. Many sources you might come across might still be using the 7th. Using the 7th edition will count as mistakes in the formatting where the 7th and the 8th edition differ.

! Where a citation is required, compile the citation underneath each question under the “Works Cited” lines (in the space before the next question). Do not create a new document !

The assignment takes about 50 minutes to complete.

(All questions need to be completed)

1) Correct the following citation for an academic article that appears in a collection (here is the original source: https://search.library.ualberta.ca/catalog/6781957):

Steven, Mark. “Styles of Extinction: Cormac McCarthy’s The Road”. The Late World of Cormac McCarthy, edited by Julian Murphet and Steven, Mark. Continuum International: 2012. Print.

Works Cited

2) Go back to the latest Tweet or blog post that you liked. Create a citation for it in correct MLA style.

Works Cited

3) MLA style uses two different indents in its documents. One is used for paragraphs and one is used for the works cited. Name the two indents and explain in steps how you create them in Word or Google docs.

4) The MLA in-text citations always need to correspond to their works cited entries. Refer to the OWL Purdue database and state what determines the first piece of information of any of your entries in the works cited. Give an example to illustrate your explanation.

5) Assume the following TV show episode streams on Crave. How would you include that in your reference? What other information do you need to include? Rewrite the example below with all of the missing information (if your solution requires a web address, give generic Crave homepage address)

Doctor Who, season 9, episode 2

Works Cited

6) Compile the citations from this worksheet as a proper Works Cited on a new page (follow the guidelines on OWL Purdue)
