Introduction
The Mayans are a people of the northern hemisphere of America expanding from the western Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. They developed a very sophisticated culture in the entire western civilization and most importantly in religion which was characterized by worship of nature gods including the sun, rain and corn. The religion was cut with the coming of the Spanish and subsequent introduction of Catholicism to the Mayans. It is however notable that they did not stop their practices of idolatry even after Catholicism but incorporated them into catholic worship. Introduction of the catholic religion to the Mayans was done by the order of the Franciscan (Sokolow,pp.104). The objective of this paper is to explore the reasons that caused a failure of the Franciscans to fully abolish the idolatry practices of the Mayans
