Please remember that all assignments are due by 11:59pm. Any assignments received within 24 hours after the deadline will receive a 10% late penalty, while assignments turned in 24-48 hours after the deadline will receive a 20% penalty. Assignments are not accepted more than 48 hours late without extenuating circumstances (i.e., medical emergency) and appropriate documentation. All parts of the process are graded.

Generally speaking, unless Blackboard itself is down, technical difficulties are not an excuse for late or missed work, and you need to give yourself enough time to overcome any technical issues and still submit your assignments punctually.
Directions
You will complete a 3-5 (FULL) page literary analysis essay, stating and reinforcing your own original idea about one of the major themes of Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. We will process this essay in parts; all parts of the process are required, and any missing parts will result in a loss of points.
First you will submit a 1-paragraph proposal that I will review and comment on. Next you will produce a rough draft that represents at least 60% of a complete essay (approximately 2 full pages). We will engage in peer review of your rough draft, and I will offer comments as well. You will then revise that draft and complete the essay, submitting it via the “Submit Here” link as a final copy.
Essay Topic
Choose one main theme in Just Mercy and explain to your readers how the book explores that theme. Any of the themes we’ve been discussing in class, listed on our weekly notes pages, are good options. Some potential themes include:
● Social justice
● Race
● Trauma and PTSD
● Resistance and Advocacy
● Hope
● Dehumanization v. Empathy
These topics are general ideas; you need to personalize the topic, narrow the scope, and make the essay your own.
At least a few times throughout your essay (1-2 times per body paragraph), you will want to make direct connections with Stevenson’s book to support your claims. This is an integral part of learning to write academically.
Essay Requirements
Here is a list of the standard requirements for the Essays, with both form and content in mind:

Citing the Book
To cite passages from the book, you must mention the full book title and author name in the introduction. After that, include the page number in a parenthetical (PAGE#) at the end of sentences that include a specific detail or direct quote. For instance:
Early in the book, Stevenson declares, “The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned” (30).
Use this method when using a quote to support your ideas. When you cite from the book, include the appropriate information at the end of your essay, on a separate sheet of paper:
