This weekend, you’ll be watching the opening matches of the League of Legends Championship Series Spring Split and writing a recap of one of the matches of your choosing. You’ll also be providing definitions of three terms you hear during the broadcast and also presenting three questions you have about the game after the cast. Here is a rundown of the details as well as what I’m looking for.

When

  • Saturday, 5 p.m. ET: Cloud9 vs. Team Liquid
  • Saturday, 6 p.m. ET: Counter Logic Gaming vs. Dignitas
  • Saturday, 7 p.m. ET: 100 Thieves vs. Golden Guardians
  • Saturday, 8 p.m. ET: Immortals vs. FlyQuest
  • Sunday, 3 p.m. ET: Dignitas vs. Evil Geniuses
  • Sunday, 4 p.m. ET: Team SoloMid vs. Immortals
  • Sunday, 5 p.m. ET: Golden Guardians vs. Cloud9
  • Sunday 6 p.m. ET: FlyQuest vs. Counter Logic Gaming

Where to watch

Style things to know

  1. In Associated Press style, which is what we’ll use throughout the class, esports is one word, all lowercase. At the start of a sentence, it takes a capital E.
  2. Team names are always plural (ex. Cloud9 are).
  3. Some common abbreviations you can use after the first reference to a team or league: LCS (League of Legends Championship Series), TSM (for Team SoloMid), CLG (for Counter Logic Gaming), EG (for Evil Geniuses), C9 (for Cloud9). Make sure you spell it out the first time around, and then you can use those abbreviations.
  4. Naming style for a player is as follows: Sean “MyGamerTag” Morrison. The name the player goes by takes quotation marks around it and is put between the first and last name of the player. On first reference, you must give the full name as shown above. After that, you can call the players by their in-game name without the quotations (ex. After that, MyGamerTag won the match for his team by …).

Some things I expect you to include

    1. The full names of every player you mention and every team.
    2. The position and team of each player when first referenced (ex. Evil Geniuses AD carry Sean “MyGamerTag” Morrison).
    3. When applicable, the character the player used (ex. MyGamerTag had five kills on Miss Fortune in the first five minutes).
    4. Time stamps like you see above to give context to the performance of the players, as well as how long the game took to complete.
    5. Which team won the game should be in the very first paragraph of the story along with who played, the date and the location.
    6. A quote from the player interviewed at the end of the match. This addition is meant to provide context to the game itself through the eyes of someone who played in it. Each match comes with a postgame interview, and a quote can be pulled from that interview.

Some resources

  • This is a dated example style-wise, but there are some building blocks for you in this recap (Links to an external site.). Note the major points of the game that are brought up and the flow of the story. There are other examples available in the right rail of that story.
  • Here’s an example of a traditional sports recap (Links to an external site.) that contains all of the elements I’m asking for. Again, use this as a reference.
  • Declan McLaughlin and myself will be available on Discord throughout the day. I’m on-site managing ESPN’s coverage of the event but can help with any obstacles you run across, as can Declan. Be proactive, and ask questions — there’s definitely someone else that has them if you do.

Terms you’ll need

  • KDA (kills/deaths/assists ratio): Use it spelled out like that on the first reference. This is a statistic that shows the performance of a player based on how many kills they got in a match, plus how many assists they had, divided by the number of deaths they accrued. It’s a common statistic used to show if a player had a good game or a bad one and should play a part in your recaps.
  • Major objectives: Keep track in your notes as you watch the match of who claims particular dragons, the Rift Heralds and the Barons. All of these usually wind up being key turning points in matches. Also note who gets the first kill in the match and who takes down the first tower, as these are good indicators of who’s winning the game early on.

Deadlines

  • Both assignments will be due at 5 p.m. ET on Monday, which means you’ll have about two days to work on them. Please be in touch if you’re struggling. Both Declan and I are here to help.
