Joliet Junior College Kenyan Interview Cultural Activity Paper Choose one of the activities in the attached document. For whatever option you choose, consider this advice.
Ask questions:
You will be getting information. Dont just be a listener. Be active.. ask WHY? and What significance does it have?
When you hear something that is interesting, and you start to say I wonder
ask
find the answer to your questions so your analysis and reflection can dig deeper
Dig deeper
When you learn a cultural value: i.e. Family is important to Spanish-speakers. Dont just stop there. Ask why? Ask what kind of examples of its importance you see in society? Ask What would be lost if this value or tradition was lost?
When you learn an important piece of information: i.e. Japanese celebrate Valentines Day, White Day and Black Day
ask Why separate dates? What does it say about the culture? What do they do on these days and what does it mean?
Spend the time
To dig deep, you have to spend the time and interact. It’s all what you make out of it and where you go with it.
Take in and interact as much as possible.
Use the resources
Specific questions have been given to you (see attachment) to help you get the information you need and address the topics that will get you a more profound understanding. Use them.
Take notes
Since you will be writing a report analyzing the information, take some notes on the aspects that were profound to you, that demonstrated a new knowledge and perspective about the culture
The notes can serve as a check: Do I have important CULTURAL information that I can go in-depth on, analyze, and reflect on it significance? If you are not getting the intended purpose, you need to be active to find it.
Focus on what matters
You arent reporting how things were done, who was there, how awesome it was and what happened.. you are there to LEARN about culture and ANALYZE its significance and REFLECT on the impact it has for you and a society.
Enjoy the external things (i.e. production, decorations, music), but dont write your report on it. I expect you to dig deeper in this report.
CRITERIA:
For your report: This is NOT a summary. Its a reflection and analysis. Its more than saying, I learned a lot about culture. What did you learn? What does it mean? Why is the information presented important to the culture? What does it say about who they are, how they live, or what they value? Do you know anything about its origin or how long it has survived? What does it mean to you? What impact would it have if YOU practiced that tradition(s) or had that value(s)? NOTE: Dont tell me superficial information. Tell me your ANALYSIS about the significance of what you learned and REFLECT on the impact it would have for those who partake and share the value of the celebratiosn/traditions.
Length: If you are using Times New Roman 12 font, double spaced with 1 inch margins, the report should be a minimum of 1.5 pages of specifics of what you learned, what it means, why its important, what it says about the culture represented, and your analysis and reflection of what impact it has on you.
