Dealing with Immigration in America: Annotated bibliography.
Alpert, J. S. (2016). On Immigration: Welcome to America. The American Journal of
Medicine, 130(4), 383-384. doi:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amjmed.2016.11.032
In this source, Alpert has focused on what the US president calls the negative impacts of
immigration into the US. In the article, the author is against what President Trump calls negative
to limit immigration into the US (Alpert, 2016). Alpert, Trump has politicized the whole issue of
immigration focusing only on one side. Most teens have moved into the US in search of what
they term as ‘green pastures.’ They come to work. The result of this is the growth of the US
economy as their expenditures happen in the states. Asians and Latin Americans are among the
people that move into the US every year. The author has used a personal example in this journal
to illustrate his points.
Bousta, L. & Abramitzky. (2018). Immigration in America Economy History. Journal of
Economic Literature, 55(4). 1311-1345. doi: 10.1257/jel.20151189
Through its broad focus is on US history on immigration, the authors have managed to
bring out the impacts of immigration into the US. They do not take sides. They analyze both the
merits and disadvantages. Through numerous examples, the audience can understand the
consequences of people moving into the US. Though Bousta and Abramitzky have taken an
economic approach; it is what the audience needs since these immigrants do not move into the
US for the purposes of recreation (Bousta & Abramitzky, 2018). For instance, some individuals
fear that immigrants are a contributing factor to the low wages that the US citizens experience.
Goldin, I., Cameron, G., & Balarajan, M. (2012). Exceptional people: How migration shaped
Our world and will define our future.
2
The authors have focused on how immigration has shaped different nations with the US, not an
exception. While others perceive it to be a problem for the country, there are significant things
which could not have been done without its existence. For instance, some of the workforce in the
US industries come from this section of the population and addressing the issue of immigration
is of great value
West, D. M., & Brookings Institution. (2010). Brain gain: Rethinking U.S. immigration
Policy. Washington, D.C: Brookings Institution Press.
Explicit knowledge of the immigration policies into the US is crucial to help learners understand
the impacts of the Immigrants into the US. Cultural, economic, political, and social impacts are a
major focus for West and the Brookings Institution. As immigrants move in, culture, economy,
politics, and society as a general are affected. Nevertheless, Darrell West has addressed different
issues that make the immigration policy a challenge in the US thus affecting its impacts.
Rhetorical Precis
Alpert, J. S. (2016). On Immigration: Welcome to America. The American Journal of
Medicine, 130(4), 383-384. doi:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.amjmed.2016.11.032
Alpert develops his thesis well by compiling different research articles by varied authors.
Nevertheless, he uses his personal experience on the issue of immigration as an addition to the
3
US economy in order to make his audience grab facts. The Author has established a strong
relationship with the audience through the provision of vivid examples which are easy to
understand.
Response to questions
From the CRAAP test, this source is valid for research since it is timely (published in 2016) and
thus relates well with the current events on immigration. Based on my current understanding, I
do agree with the examples provided since they present what I see every day. The weakness of
this article is the failure to address specific immigrant groups since the way Americans perceive
people from Latin and Africa is not the same way they perceive the Chinese and Japanese. This
source does not change my thinking of the topic, but it adds more things to evaluate. Given its
credibility, I will use this source in my writing.
Bousta, L. & Abramitzky. (2018). Immigration in America Economy History. Journal of
Economic Literature, 55(4). 1311-1345. doi: 10.1257/jel.20151189
Bousta and Abramitzky support their thesis by using numerous verified sources from the archive.
The economic aspect of human life is a vital one, and in order to make the audience understand
the impact of immigration on it, it is vital to give lots of examples. The general audience is
targeted since people move to the US and those living there get affected by the newcomers. An
open relationship is created between the audience and the authors since they do not tell them
what to think but what to think about.
Response to questions
Based on the CRAAP test, this is a credible source since it is current, response to my question
and the authors are certified. Looking at how the aliens are improving trade, I do agree on the
economic approach of the author. It is a unique angle of approach. The weakness is that the
4
author focuses only on economic issues and immigration and fail to address social, political, and
cultural issues. The source adds a lot to what I know and does not change my mind about the
topic. It is a source I will definitely use in my research.
Goldin, I., Cameron, G., & Balarajan, M. (2012). Exceptional people: How migration shaped
Our world and will define our future.
To support their thesis, the authors make use of what is happening in the current world.
Immigration shapes culture, economy, and social life and in order to help people understand its
impacts, the author choose to rely on the existing, proven statistics. The general audience is
targeted since it is an issue affecting the entire society.
Response to questions
In the CRAAP test, this source is accurate and supported with evidence. In conducting
research, I will use this source. I do agree with the concept that immigration has an impact on our
future and it is something we need to know and think about. The weakness of the article is that it
is too general and has not selected a specific theme to work on so that the audience can have a
perfect understanding. The document supports my topic and leaves it unchanged except for
additional of few facts.
West, D. M., & Brookings Institution. (2010). Brain gain: Rethinking U.S. immigration
Policy. Washington, D.C: Brookings Institution Press.
West focusses on various US immigration policies to support his thesis. In order to let the
audience have a good understanding of the immigration policies, the author chooses to use
statistics from government documents as well the research works of other authentic authors. An
open relationship is created since West chooses no sides in addressing the issue.
Response to questions
5
This is a credible source from the CRAAP test since it comprises of government sources.
Nevertheless, it is current, and the information is relevant to my topic which implies I will not
drop it as one of my sources. The weakness is the attachment of the policies to the government
that giving more focus on the people which makes it sound political. What I like is the way of
delivery which is clear for even the audience with the minimal capability of understanding
government documents. Its support for the topic converge with my theme and gives me no room
to change it.

Reasons for Dealing with Immigration in the US
Introduction
Immigration refers to the movement of people from their countries to other countries, due
to reasons like education, natural calamities employment war among other things. The United
States is among the leading countries having higher number of immigrants. Immigration has
caused both positive and negative impact in the US society, and this raises the need of dealing
with it. Dealing with it might be in terms of regulations, banning immigration completely,
supporting immigrants, etc. The following aspects explain why immigration should be dealt
with according to its positive or negative impact.
Positive impacts of immigration to the US
? It has led to an increase in population base
•
Higher number of immigrants has encouraged exchange of cultures and ideas
•
This in turn has led to much innovation in the US and massive technological
improvements (Gutiérrez, np.).
•
This was achieved through legalizing immigration, resulting to a positive impact.
Surname 2
? Immigration has helped in creating global market
•
For instance, more than 40% of the GDP of Guatemala comes through
remittances provided by immigrants
•
Immigrants who advance in education also have a chance of taking the skills
learns beck to their counties (Gutiérrez, np.).
•
Immigrants basically create stronger local economies and contribute in stronger
global economies.
? It encourages entrepreneurship
•
Normally immigrants are natural entrepreneurs. Most of them are highly
educated, skilled and come up with better ideas.
•
Their high skills and hard work make it possible to create new jobs, enhance
innovation and making existing jobs more flexible (Gutiérrez, np.).
•
This increases the economic status of the country.
? Immigration raises GDP
•
A small increase in the national GDP when immigration happens at lower levels.
•
The productivity of immigrants can cause a GDP increase of 4% per year. For
instance, one-tenth increase in U.S. GDP is equal to $18 billion. This means that
immigrants contribute $72 billion annually to the US economy (Gutiérrez, np.).
Surname 3
Negative impacts of Immigration in the US
? It encourages transmission of diseases
•
Many diseases are transferred due to immigration.
•
Disease-causing agents are transferred across the border by immigrants, affecting
the US locals who are not used to them.
•
Screening process might therefore be helpful in preventing the disease transfer.
? It creates stressors in educational and medical resources
•
This results from the higher population caused by immigration, making the
available facilities insufficient.
•
Most immigrants come to make a new life, and for this reason they require full
support from the society.
•
For this reason, there is need for the government to provide healthcare and
educational services for the immigrants.
? It reduces the chances of developing the nation
•
This is because a lot is spending in catering for the needs of the immigrants,
instead of focusing on the development.
•
Other issues like terrorism are also caused by immigrants, some of the practices
that lead to massive destruction whenever they happen, killing a lot of people who
could cause a positive change to the nation (Payan, np.).
•
This raises the need of reducing the number of immigrants allowed in the US.
Surname 4
? Immigration creates wage disparities
•
In the developed countries, immigrants are usually ready to work for lower wages,
one of the factors that makes them easily employed (Payan, np.).
•
This opportunity is normally meant for the US citizens, therefore high number of
immigrants in the nation causes wage disparities (Payan, np.).
•
To manage this, it is important for the nation to consider sparing some jobs for its
citizens.
Counterargument
Immigrates puts the united states in a significant risk with elements such as terrorism becoming a
real threat. The fact is that with the global issue in terrorism the united states cannot afford to be
with these immigrates. It is also essential to understand that most of this migrate have even
contributed to the worsening cases of security in the states (White, np.). With this in mind
allowing them into the states is a big a gamble.
Rebuttal
Although there is a dark side to immigrants in the united states their values to the economy
cannot be underestimated. The fact is that if the right screening is done then risk such as
terrorism can be avoided. Second, any coin has two sides dealing with issues requires
anticipation and collaboration. The united states have enough regulation that can deal with these
elements all together. Board security and homeland security can make sure that the united states
are secure at any time (White, np.).
Conclusion
Surname 5
As it stands, the American economy is benefiting from immigrates. If all laws are followed, then
everything will be beneficial to the American government. If the number of immigrates remains
well organized then the effects is a growing economy. A health working nation will also be
created, and the united states will remain world superpower.
