The other assigned reading can be found in files. How would you explain what “Ethnic Studies” is to your friend/family member/co-worker/other person who is not familiar with this field of study? What makes Ethnic Studies (or “multiculturalism” before it) different than just adding more diversity to existing explanations and understandings of history and society? What is the significance of San Francisco State College (now University) in the history of Ethnic Studies? How would you compare the issues arising on college campuses in the 1960s and 1970s with issues on college campuses today, whether on ASU campuses or elsewhere? What are some common criticisms of Ethnic Studies, and what are some rebuttals by Ethnic Studies scholars and teachers to those criticisms? Some people argue that race is real while other argue that race is not real. In what ways are both of these statements accurate? In other words, how is race real in society, and how is it not real? How can social categories work together to position an individual within societal hierarchies? How does the concept of intersectionality help us understand these interlocking societal positions?
