1101 Multiple-Source Essay
Write a research essay of at least 750-1000 words on a topic agreed upon by you and the
instructor. Regardless of how you focus your topic, remember that you must have a
narrow topic that can be supported with credible, recent research. The purpose of
your essay is to demonstrate good researching skills and appropriate, logical
information. Your thesis statement should reflect this.
It is important to have a personal commitment to the topic, so please select something to
research that relates to your interests but is researchable. Make yourself an expert on
this issue by reading widely and talking to authorities in the field, if possible. In your
essay, provide reasons and evidence for and about the topic based on personal
observation and authoritative sources. Three to five sources are required for a passing
grade. At least two of these sources must come from the GCSC Library Databases.
You must be able to find a variety of professional/academic sources on your specific
topic, including but not limited to interviews, books, documentaries, magazines and
scholarly journals, newspaper articles, and online resources.
Internal sources used within the paper, will need in-text parenthetical references
following the MLA 8th edition guidelines and external citations, citations on a works

Specific Research Paper Guidelines

Spacing
? The essays margins must be one-inch on the top, bottom, left, and right. If you are using
anything older than Word 2007 (if you use Microsoft Word), make certain to check your
margins.
? The essay must be double spaced. Absolutely everything from the heading through the
works-cited entries must be double spaced.
? There should be no extra spaces between paragraphs, your heading and the title, the title
and the introduction, or the words Works Cited and the works-cited entries. If you use
Word 2007 or a newer version (if you use Microsoft Word), make certain that you go into
the paragraph settings and change the space after your paragraphs to zero.
? If you wait until you finish the essay to fix spacing issues, remember that Ctrl A
highlights the entire document and Ctrl 2 double spaces everything.
? If you use something other than Microsoft Word, make certain that you double check the
spacing information mentioned above as well.
Header Information
? The paper must have a header half an inch from the upper right corner on each page that
includes your last name and the page number (Smith 1).
? Always insert the header correctly by using the word-processing softwares header tool.
If you type the header on each page as you type the essay, then any changes made to the
page will move the header, which will change your margins.
? The header must be the same font as the rest of the essay. Make certain to change the
font of absolutely every aspect of your essay, including the header, to Times New
Roman twelve-point font.

? The paper must have the proper heading as the first four lines of the first page (your
name, my name, the course and section number, and the essays due date):

? Type the date instead of allowing the word-processing software to insert the date because
the date that is inserted will change every time the essay is opened, which will make the

you will present in the essay.
? The introduction should grab your attention by making you think about the argument that
is going to be made.

Your thesis cannot be a question because you cannot prove a question and should not be a
quotation because the essay should be your argument, not anyone elses.

quotations and paraphrases.
Grammar and Diction
? Go back through the essay to check your grammar for correctness. Keep in mind that
egregious grammar and punctuation errors impact your effectiveness, so fix obvious
errors.
? Make certain that the tone of your essay is academic instead of conversational.
Remember that there is a difference between spoken English and academic writing.
