Geronimo Book Discussion Assignment – Mar. 9-10 This discussion corresponds with our primary source reading of Geronimo’s, Geronimo My Life book. Now that we have completed the book and quizzes, this is an opportunity to further analyze Geronimo’s words and share your thoughts on his life and accomplishments. Please respond to the following prompt: 1. From what you have read, do you see Geronimo as a brave warrior or a war criminal? What was Geronimo’s final wish for his life? Google where Geronimo died and was buried and share whether his last wish was realized. 2. Before reading this book, had you heard of Geronimo or his name before? If so, in what context? I was five years old when I first heard the name “Geronimo!” being shouted by my dad as he drove down the 5 freeway merging into 6 lanes of traffic. We were from a rural community up North and my dad was unfamiliar with SoCal traffic. This may sound silly but he was clearly summoning the courage of Geronimo to survive the freeway system. The Apache more recently was in the news over their protest to Special Ops Seal Team 6 using the code word “Geronimo” for their raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan in 2011 . The military responded that they used this name to reflect Geronimo’s bravery and courage not to berate his memory or compare him to a terrorist. Share the context you have heard Geronimo’s name used before and what it means to you. 3. Pierce College is built on stolen Chumash and Tongva land. What do you think should be done to rectify some of the many wrongs done to these indigenous peoples? How can we improve our education on indigenous peoples?
