GEOG 120 LAB 13
LAB SECTION ___________
Laboratory 13: Hurricanes
Introduction
Tropical cyclones and hurricanes threaten United States coastlines every summer and fall
producing heavy rains, high winds and damaging storm surges. This laboratory activity will use
the NOAA National Hurricane Center archives as a primary source to gather information about a
deadly or damaging United States landfalling hurricane. The National Hurricane Center (NHC)
is located in Miami, Florida on the campus of Miami International University. The mission of the
NHC is to save lives and mitigate property loss. This is accomplished through the issuing of
timely and accurate watches, warnings and forecasts. The NHC staff also provides detailed
analyses of past events, archives which we will access in this laboratory activity. The goal of this
activity is to use a specific event to better understand tropical storm development.
1. Answer the following preliminary questions from your textbook readings on Hurricanes
and Tropical Storms:
a. In your own words, describe the ingredients needed for tropical storm development.
b. Define the following:
Tropical depression
Tropical storm
Hurricane
Extratropical storm
c. Why is the highest storm surge typically found in the right front quadrant of a
hurricane that is making landfall? Define right front quadrant in your own words.
d. Using an internet search engine, library reference book or other method, look up three
different hurricane events that made landfall and significantly impacted the United
States between 1995 and the previous calendar year. List the three potential events
here.
2. Get the Data
a) Choose one of the events above for your focus. List your event here:
b) Go to the NOAA National Hurricane Center Archive page at
https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/.
c) Search for your event by clicking the appropriate year and then select the PDF file
associated with that event.
d) Each archive report contains the following sections:
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
Synoptic History
Meteorological Statistics
Casualty and Damage Statistics
Forecast Warning and Critique
Tables, Charts, Maps and Diagrams
e) Read through all sections of the report and summarize the following:
a. Synoptic history with special focus on ingredients for tropical storm
development.
b. Storm track through time including all landfall locations.
c. Key meteorological statistics.
d. Important casualty and damage statistics.
e. Did anything stand out in the Forecast Warning and Critique? State the key
take away point.
f. Save the figures showing wind speed and pressure throughout time.
f) Use an internet search engine to find photos, news articles or other first person
accounts of the event.
3. Apply your Knowledge
a) Share your knowledge of this event with others by preparing a Video Blog, Text
Blog, or Powerpoint presentation of your event, your instructor may provide further
information, be sure to include all of the information summarized in Get the Data
questions 5 and 6. Be sure your project includes all the information found in e
