EN 282 Guidelines for genre analysis
Consider how weve looked at media issues and the evolution of genres in this course. There are literally hundreds of possible topics you might write on here. Also, the incorporation of additional media into this
essay is encouraged IF you can explain to me at your conference how/why it will benefit the reader, help him/her gain a greater understanding of your topic, or provide tangible examples of the ideas youre
discussing.
Add music sample/examples? This must be a minimum of 1,000 words (not counting citation/documentation). Remember everything about formatting, spacing, etc.
ALSO: You must use/cite/document at least one scholarly source* for this essay. There is extra credit available if you complete the library research assignment in the course of researching your topic.
As before, though, you must accurately cite/document your sources using MLA guidelines (remember, theres an MLA guide on the Purdue OWL site linked to Moodle).
I expect your voice/tone/point of view here to be relatively objective; that is, Im not going to penalize you for "stepping out" of third-person perspective, but I also dont want to see
cutting/sarcastic comments, overtly opinionated statements, or embarking on thinly-related tangents. Stick to the topic at hand and work within that. Within that, though, feel free to speculate, make suggestions,
or informally comment on how a certain work/author/artist/filmmaker/etc. reflects some aspect of your argument.
Introduction: In your first paragraph, make sure you state the intent of your essay; that is, introduce the genre you are analyzing, and state your ideas on how you can demonstrate its development/evolution
through certain works/media (and/or analyzing what historical events or forces have shaped it).
Body/discussion paragraphs will then "roll out" your examples and explain their importance to the genre or to the issue at hand, and why they are relevant to the other examples youll cite/use. This
is also where you can embed/include other media to serve as examples or to better highlight your examples (film clips, photos, images 90s ravers and now, etc.).
Conclusion: You must bring the essay to a close by reminding the reader of your argument and perhaps suggest some other works that also fit the genre or other events/works that are central in studying a
medium, but that you didnt get to in your essay. Basically, state what else is important to understand about your topic that you didnt discuss in the body paragraphs. You might even consider saving a certain
example for the conclusion. <<such as?
*A "scholarly source" is one that is specialized and pointed and written by an academic or expert in that field. Books and journal articles from peer-reviewed publications are the most common
scholarly sources, but if you have a source whose qualities are vague to you in this regard, or you want to make your case for a non-academic/scholarly source in your essay, please contact me

Bibliography and Abstract
Abstract:
The overall main idea for this essay is the explanation of the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) genre as a whole, and how it came to be the phenomenon that it is today. To understand EDM, it is important to
know about its roots, as well as the multiple sub-genres that evolved over time. Each sub-genre spawned new variations, which are all considered to be part of the larger EDM umbrella. The goal here is to
breakdown a big section of music into smaller parts that can be classified into four groups: house, techno, drum and bass, and trance. However, there is much debate and speculation on which songs fit into
each of these subgenres, causing new genres to be created to suit these. Also included will be the culture surrounding EDM, including styles of dress, beliefs, and drug use, all of which are part of the rave
scene that accompanies this music.

This essay explains briefly the subgenres of EDM, as well as the history of raves and rave culture in the 80s and 90s. The author also goes on to argue that the DJ is like a shaman who guides the audience
through a spiritual experience. This source will be used to demonstrate the antics of rave-goers and EDM listeners, but not as a whole: it is important to recognize that there are many people who would
disagree with such an interpretation of the DJ as a shaman.
Pluto, Mars. Internet Chat Interview. 05 Apr 2014.
Mars Pluto is an EDM producer who has been making music for nine years now. He has played with well-known artists such as Bingo Players, Bassjackers, MakJ, Candyland, Koan Sound, Gemini, and
Sound Remedy. He has more than 70 thousand plays on his SoundCloud music site, and is featured on blogs such as Real Trap and Dance Your Face Off. We went to high school together and he is generously
allowing me to interview him for this essay, to better explain the subgenres of EDM.

This article and its comments will be used to discuss the on-going debate between ravers about the culture itself. The genre of EDM encompasses a belief that is largely about Peace, Love, Unity, and
Respect or PLUR between all people, but in reality, there is a lot of hate here. The article is written by a British author (Clive Martin), discriminating against Americas interpretation of the rave scene. Below
is the insightful comment by Will, a well-reasoned argument.
mixed feelings on this. I agree with a great deal but guess what? EDM is the most logical term to describe the broad collective of genres that pertain to this scene and if you think that makes us sound like
novices then thats your own problem and you should know you look completely idiotic for complaining about such an insignificant aspect of this scene. You make some solid points, especially regarding the
more inexperienced fans in the USA who are all about "popping a molly" and making fools of themselves, but a large part of this article also shows that youre unwilling to accept that this music (Ill
refrain from calling it EDM to satisfy your elitist agenda) and this scene has evolved and changed dramatically. Quit making up rules for something that doesnt need any and trying to make yourself appear to be
superior by posting condescending, opinionated, generalizing criticisms of people you pretend to know everything about

Both of these YouTube videos can be used to exhibit examples of the sub-genres of Electronic Dance Music. They include sound samples, as well as the name of the artist and sub-genre that is playing.
Definitions of terms:
Rave
Dictionary.com: a professionally organized party for young people, with electronic dance music, sometimes held in a field or disused building
Vocabulary.com: a dance party that lasts all night and electronically synthesized music is played
Urbandictionary.com: An underground party in which electronic music is played, dancing occurs in a very free-form fashion. The dress of the partygoers is quite unrestrained. It is rumored that there is
ALWAYS drug use involved, but this is not ALWAYS correct. There are straight-edge ravers who dont take part in drug use. Like me.
