Gender stratification as and ideology refers to the conformity to the societal set standards that gives men and women unequal chances in life. This is worsened by culture especially where the culture calls for ideal types in the set standards. Gender stratification can therefore be used to accrue undue advantage or disadvantage to one gender, a fact that societies across the economic and racial divide has used to discriminate against women.
The issue of gender stratification has been debated in sociological circles for a long period of time. In some instances the issue has been an emotive one with some thinkers viewing as a way of discriminating others and as a way to deny people equal opportunities in life. To functionalists, gender stratification is more of a way of living for the society, a form of the societal structure to ensure that all aspects of life are well taken care of and to ensure that the society achieves its harmonious co-existence.
