FYS 112 02, 03, and 04 – Toward a Compassionate Society – Spring 2020 – Summary-and-Analysis Essay
(Paper 3) – 15% of grade – at least 3 full pages. MLA format, please. I will not grade a paper that does not use
signal phrases and in-text parenthetical citations responsibly. This essay should be freshly written, for this class
only. Use short quotations only (that is, shorter than 4 of your lines).
Step 1: a) CAREFULLY read Mahbub ul Haq’s “Toward a Compassionate Society” (the link is in the Content
section of bblearn). Be an active reader and thinker.
b) Watch the presentation recorded on panopto (green icon), in the Content section of bblearn.
Yes, there’s an error in the panopto presentation: ul Haq did not propose family planning services to all
malnourished children; he DID propose family planning service for all willing couples.
Step 2: Write a summary and analysis essay with the following paragraphs:
I.
Introduction which should both introduce and contain your THESIS: Mahbub ul Haq’s article
“Toward A Compassionate Society” is/is not worth reading …. (the “because” part [your essay
map] will be developed from your three analysis paragraphs)
II.
Summary of ul Haq’s article in your own words and sentence structure (keep your opinion of the
book out of the summary: summarize only ul Haq’s ideas, in the order in which he presents
them) – Don’t forget to begin the summary with a signal phrase. Don’t forget to include his six
steps. The summary should be no more than two-thirds of a page.
III.
First analysis paragraph (a regular TRIAC body paragraph)
IV.
Transition + Second analysis paragraph (a regular TRIAC body paragraph)
V.
Transition + Third analysis paragraph (a regular TRIAC body paragraph)
VI.
Transition + Conclusion (short!)
VII.
Works Cited Page correctly formatted in current MLA format.
By what criteria will you analyze the book?
Everyone will analyze the book by the following criterion:
1) Does ul Haq distinguish between actions that are compassionate from actions that are not
compassionate?
In addition, select TWO criteria from the following:
2) Does ul Haq use appropriate and relevant content to develop ideas?
3) Does he use language that communicates meaning to the reader?
4) Does he articulate issues/problems to be considered critically in a manner that defines terms, explores
ambiguities, determines boundaries and/or establishes backgrounds?
5) Does he acknowledge different sides of the issue? Question some assumptions? Identify several
relevant contexts when presenting a position?
Once you have written your body paragraphs, you can look at the topic sentences and reverse engineer the
thesis statement and essay map. You will need to revise the paper after doing so.
Remember that whether you like/dislike the article is not the determining criterion.
Peer Review on April 20 – by Discussion Board or email (up to you)
Primary Reader’s letter is due to your author and wt5 on March 27 at 11:59 p.m.
Revise, revise, revise. Edit, too.
Final version due on paper on April 24 to turnitin.com. If bblearn’s link to turnitin.com will not work for
you, please email the paper to Prof. Thomas at wt5@evansville.edu.
Why are we doing this? To develop a thesis on the basis of the careful reading of a text. To clearly articulate the
reasons for your opinion. To enjoy hearing others’ opinions during the peer review.
Questions? Ask Professor Thomas at any stage of the writing process: drafts, bits and pieces, ideas. The
Writing Center is also a valuable resource, as is the peer copyediting service.
