Description
Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker. If you like or know the film, Zero Dark Thirty, it is also an option. For these brief papers (1-2 pages, single spaced) you may want to consider how the director represents the narrative in order to help us better understand an aspect of American history and culture. Your job in the film reflection is to detect different strategies the director uses to emphasize what is important to him or her. It is best to pick only a two to five minute scene from a movie and consider all the elements of analysis in great detail and then tell us how it is an example of how the film works overall. Since we are focusing on narratives in our discussion of contemporary American women’s short stories, you may want to look at how narrative works in films. The narrative of the film is the glue that holds everything together. It is the overarching category of film analysis. The steps you may take in writing about a film’s narrative in relation to the other aspects of the scene you chose include: Describe briefly what you see in the selected sequence/scene. What is the filmmaker trying to communicate in this segment? Who are the main protagonists/stars/secondary characters? What is the function and significance this segment has for the film as a whole and your understanding of it?
