Write a 3-5 page (750-1250 words) essay comparing any two of the short stories we have read this semester, answering of one of the prompts below. Make sure that your thesis clearly and directly answers your chosen prompt.

Support your thesis with analyses of key passages from the stories that provide appropriate evidence for your argument and explain how that evidence works to support it.

Citations should be in MLA format and you should attach a separate, MLA-formatted works cited page (see the Purdue OWL’s MLA Guide link on Blackboard for help with this).

• What support do the stories we have read offer for Emily Dickinson’s assertion that “Much Madness is divinest Sense?” Choose characters from two stories that are viewed by society as mad and explain how it might be argued that they exhibit “divinest sense.”
• Examine two of the representatives of established order—the lawyer in “Bartleby, the Scrivener,” the Ticktockman, Lengel in “A&P,” etc.—and discuss which attitudes they share and how effectively they function as spokespeople for law and order. Compare and evaluate the kinds of law and order each represents.
• Several characters in the stories we have read are rebels. What similarities do you find between these rebels? Choose two of them and explain how their attitudes and actions constitute an attack on the status quo.
