Draw and label a diagram that illustrates and explains the ecological significance of counter-current circulation (as discussed in class). Ideally, you will draw this using software (you can draw in PPT., but there are better options) and upload to Blackboard as an image. Alternatively, you can draw by hand and scan (there are free scanning apps available for phones). That failing, you can take a pic with your phone and send to me via email if necessary.

Question 3:

Choose one of the following essay questions to answer. I expect topic sentences, correct format (intro, body, conclusions) and detailed descriptions.

Essay 1: The distribution of species across the globe is influenced by physical factors, and one of the most dramatic patterns is visible in distinct latitudinal bands of wet and dry habitats. What forces govern such patterns? What about exceptions to the “rules?” For example, bands of wet and dry habits can be disrupted in certain parts of the planet where you might observe a particular biome in a location where you wouldn’t expect it. (The converse is also true: biomes are often missing from locations where you’d expect them). Your essay should focus on the forces that result in the patterns discussed above. Use the North American continent (including Central America) as a focal point for your essay. In short, explain the distribution of biomes across North America as best you can.

Essay 2: We discussed a hybrid zone between black-capped and Carolina chickadees in class. That hybrid zone is very narrow, implying that there are barriers to gene flow that keep the genetic identity of the two species intact. What do you think maintains those barriers? Use what you’ve learned about natural selection (and the different types therein) and the factors that govern a species range limits at high latitudes (i.e. toward the poles) or elevations vs. the limits at low latitudes (i.e., toward the equator) and elevations. What might happen if the barriers to gene flow were to magically disappear? Would one or both species benefit, or would there be negative consequences? There are several ways to approach these questions and I’m looking for your ability to apply what you’ve learned in a critical manner (in other words, I’m less interested in “right” answers and more interested in your ability to think critically and communicate your ideas).
