In an essay of no more than 7 pages, answer the following question:
1. Kant argues that the supreme principle of morality is the categorical imperative, of which he offers different

formulations. Focusing on the second formulation of the categorical imperative, the Formula of Humanity (FH):
(a) Explain, in your own words, why FH might be thought to be a plausible candidate for the supreme principle of

morality. In explaining why one might take it to be a plausible supreme principle, be sure to explain both what

is meant by ‘supreme principle of morality’. Give examples that are meant to persuade the reader that the FH is

genuinely useful for helping us understand the moral wrongness of certain ways of treating people.
(b) Consider Kant’s examples that are meant to illustrate the plausibility of FH. Which example do you take to be

Kant’s most persuasive example and which do you take to be Kant’s least persuasive example? In both cases,

explain why you think the example does or does not do a nice job of illustrating the plausibility of FH.
(c) Finally, give a case of your own devising in which you take FH to fail to offer a plausible explanation of

the moral wrongness of a particular way of treating another that is intuitively morally wrong. Be sure to explain

why you find the explanation of the wrongness of treating others in the way suggested by FH unsatisfactory and

offer what you take to be a better explanation of the wrongness of this way of acting. In answering, be sure to

consider what Kant (or a Kantian) might say in response to the charge that FH does not help identify an plausible

explanation of why treating another in this way is morally wrong.
