I’m studying for my English class and need an explanation.

Look at each sentence individually and check for the following:

NO use of the pronoun “you”

Fragments (make sure each sentence is a complete thought…does it make sense by itself? If you write fragments a lot, try reading your paper from the end to the beginning…this puts the sentences out of order and makes finding fragments easier).

Run Ons (make sure only one complete thought is expressed at a time. Use periods or semi-colons to separate complete thoughts)

Comma Splices (two complete thoughts separated by a comma. For example: I went to the store, I bought all my groceries.)

Change contractions to the full word (for example: don’t = do not, they’re=they are

• 150 words and 3 sentences might indicate run on or fused sentences; 150 words and 15 sentences might indicate fragments or choppy sentences)
• Is there an appropriate title? Make sure it is capitalized correctly, not bolded, and not underlined. Essay 1, Compare Contrast, or__________ vs_____________, are not acceptable titles.
• Is the paper in proper MLA format?
• Does the paper meet the 3 full page length requirement?
• transitions (these should be at the beginning of body paragraphs)
• Bracket the thesis statement
• topic sentences of each body paragraph ( should “match” the summary information from #4 AND should directly support the thesis statement from #5)
• transitions (these transitions signal compare/contrast relationship..these should be between subjects to show that the author has transitioned from talking about subject A to talking about subject B. There should also be order transitions that show the author has transitioned from point 1 to point 2 and so on)
• Bracket the concluding sentence
• any sentences that do not support the topic sentence (in other words, any sentence that does not support the compare/contrast relationship)

Correct grammar errors:

Do NOT use “YOU”

Punctuation (commas, periods, question marks, apostrophes)

Look for tricky spelling (their/they’re/there, its/it’s etc)

Look for incomplete sentences

Replace pronouns (it, them, they, some, etc) with actual names

For example: Instead of writing: her room, write Sarah’s room
