Expert interview requirement
As part of the proposal essay, conduct an interview with someone who is an expert in an area related to
the topic of your essay. A face-to-face interview is preferable, but it’s also possible to do the interview
by phone or email. Your interviewee will serve as a source for your paper, someone who can give you an
expert perspective on some aspect of your subject. An “expert” for the purposes of this paper is
someone who has rich knowledge of the area you’re writing about, who knows the topic broadly,
usually a professional or teacher in the field.
If you need help developing a proposal, your expert interviewee might be able to point you in the right
direction or help you focus or expand an idea you already have. Or, if you already have a pretty good
idea what your proposal is, your interviewee might provide you good feedback on the feasibility of your
plan or any relevant precedents.
You should record or take thorough notes of the interview
and incorporate and cite it appropriately into your paper as
a primary source. You will submit your interview materials
as an appendix with your causal-proposal essay at the end.
It takes time to set up and conduct an interview, so decide
who or what kind of person you might want to interview
and start reaching out to them as soon as possible. Ask me
if you aren’t sure who to interview for your topic.
Tips for a successful interview
1. Contact the interviewee as soon as possible to give them ample time to fit you into their
schedule.
2. When you speak to the interviewee to set up the appointment, ask for a set time, like thirty
minutes.
3. Briefly tell the interviewee what kind of project this is, i.e., which class it’s for and what the
purpose/intent of your paper is.
4. Arrive on time. Don’t be late to your interview.
5. Come prepared. Have a list of questions so that you can make the most of your time, probably
between 10 and 20 questions.
6. Inform the interviewee that since this is a public writing class, their words and ideas will be read
by others, and ask for their verbal consent (they say “yes/ok”). Keep up your end of the bargain
by representing them fairly in your essay and citing them accurately.
7. Ask questions to fit your outline; use your outline to help guide your questions.
8. Ask open-ended (wh-) questions instead of yes-or-no questions. The quality of your questions
should also reflect the amount of background research you’ve already done on the topic.
9. Ask follow-up questions and leave room in your notes to do so.
10. Watch the time in the interview. When it gets close to the time you’ve asked for, it’s up to you
to wrap things up. If you want to stay longer, ask the interviewee for a few more minutes and
only stay if they say yes. To wrap up, thank the interviewee for taking time out of their busy
schedule to meet with you.
