It needs to be 4-6 pages, MLA format, minimum of 4 outside sources (not including the stories), and minimum of 4 quotations from each story. Your essay will be based on Where are you Going, Where Have you
Been? by Joyce Carol Oats and Young Goodman Brown, by Nathaniel
Hawthorne.
In both of these texts, the reader is presented with seemingly innocent
characters that meet with evil and are destroyed by it. Which text
better illustrates the terrifying existence of evil in the world.
Steps to writing this essay:
1. Analyze the protagonists (victims) role in their journey to evil.
2. Analyze the antagonists (Satan and Arnold Friend) and how they
carry out their plots.
3. Research the real events that inform the stories The Salem
Witch Trial and The Pied Piper Murders.
4. Research how, as a society, our perception of evil has changed
from the Puritans view in the late 17th century, the time in which
Young Goodman Brown, is set, to 1966 the time in which
Where are you Going, Where Have you Been? is set.
