Employment benefit is benefits that are provided to a corporations employees
outside of wages and compensations. Employment benefits can be given in many
different ways. Different forms of employment benefit can be different depending on
different corporations and different situations. It usually comes within the salary
package. There are a variety of employment benefits. These benefits include health
insurance, paid time off, retirement benefits account, etc. These benefits can secure
their personal benefits. Therefore, employee benefits are important in all organizations.
They are the promises of each organization to offer their employees a good future.
Those benefits provide employees the welfare and security in various ways to work for
the organizations and improve the efficiency of productivity in the workplace. Effective
and accurate employee benefits also extend the positive life circulation of productivity
and provide a good working atmosphere and working environment to all employees.
The outbreak of COVID-19 had resulted in a pandemic in the United States.
Many first responders had reacted immediately during this emergency event. While
many employees were ordered to work from home, the first responders stayed in their
position to help. The first responders include doctors, nurses, couriers, market workers,
and policemen. Their risk of staying in their positions are higher than all other jobs.
Consequently, it is essential to provide employment benefits to the first responders
during any emergency.
In this project, we are going to research first responders benefits. We will
illustrate the importance of ensuring first responders benefits. In addition, we will
study how they affect employers as well. We will offer recommendations for improving
current issues.
Problem Statement
To investigate what kind of employee benefits are efficient and available to offer the
first responders and to determine the particularity/ uniqueness of employee benefits for
matching the particularity of their job content.
Research Questions
1. What kind of employee benefit should be provided to first responders?
2. What challenges did companies face when they offer benefits to first responders?
3. What are the criteria for gaining the first responder benefit?
Methodology
Under the COVID-19 pandemic, we are limited to in-person meetings. We used UCR
librarys online database as a source to find the answers to our research questions.
Also, we used resources from trusted articles to support our claims. We often use
Zoom to meet up and discuss our findings and evaluate the findings as their fit to the
questions.
Research and Findings
Question 1: What kind of employee benefit should be provided to first responders?
Question 2: What challenges did companies face when they offer benefits to first
responders?
Every organization is expected to offer benefits to its employees, depending on
the employment level. A company provides its employment benefits according to its
financial capability. However, these benefits pose some challenges to a business. The
challenges include the rise in medical costs, misunderstanding the healthcare needs of
an employee, an increase in mental health awareness, lack of integration between HR
working systems and short term leaves.
The main challenge faced in benefit programs is rising healthcare costs.
Prescription drugs, doctor appointments and medical procedures are becoming more
expensive. The current Coronavirus pandemic has victimized many individuals. In case
of any ailment, an individual seeks medical help. When an individual becomes
hospitalized, the hospital bill goes higher due to maintenance. In such cases, the
employer caters to the medical benefits of the specific individual as an employee. Costs
associated with long-term treatments and expensive medication causes tension in a
company. An organization should participate in the right benefits to avoid
comprehensive coverage that would drain its finance (Sill, 2019).
Another challenge is understanding the healthcare needs of an employee. Lack
of proper understanding between employee coverage and the benefits packages offered
could result in wastage of resources. Miscommunication happens due to lack of
awareness. The employees could not be aware of the existence of the benefits, or they
do not understand how they could benefit from them. A company that offers a
luxurious package is likely to face loss in terms of resources. An employee that is not
aware of the benefits they receive or which covers are right for them may lead a
company towards losses. An organization should have a standard benefits package, and
employee needs so that it does not incur losses. At the same time, employees should be
made knowledgeable about the benefit packages they have and which ones are suitable
for them (Sill, 2019).
Another pressing challenge is the rise in mental health awareness. Mental health
affects the work environment. A poor work environment means low productivity in a
company. Taking care of employees mental health is part of a companys duty. Many
businesses fail to provide frameworks that boost the mental health of workers. A
potential employee would opt for a company that considers their psychological wellbeing. Therefore, a company must consider the mental state of its employees when
formulating a benefits strategy (Gierut, 2019).
Backend integration between the benefits administration, the payroll and HRIS
challenges the HR department. An HR professional needs all these tools to carry out
daily tasks. An HR may need HRIS to archive employee data, HCM to manage people,
the payroll system and the benefits system. Lack of integration between these
applications may lead a company to data redundancy and errors that may eventually
lead to low productivity and increased operational costs (Gierut, 2019).
The final challenge is the management of short term disabilities and family
medical leave provision. Short term disabilities and FMLA are unplanned. An
organization must provide a safety net for these circumstances. When an employee
applies for leave, an organization has an obligation to cater to it. Several organizations
lack clear leave application procedures. The uncertainty creates a relationship gap
between the employer and employee. Such strained relationships could lead to lawsuits,
which is not suitable for a company. Company benefits should include proactive
policies that give employees and their families ample time to deal with their situations.
At the same time, maintain productivity and support to team members in the absence
of some participants. Leave application should be precise. The approval process should
be transparent, and the re-entry plan should be established (Gierut, 2019).
Question 3: What are the criteria for gaining the first responder benefit?
The criteria for getting the first responder benefits is the employees should be
according to requirements of the first responders. The employees should take part in
contributing to the Covid-19, such as, the doctors, police officers, nurses, couriers,
market workers and so on. They work on the front lines at the risk of being infected
by the Covid-19 in order to maintain the normal lives of people.
The society should be divided all the first responders to two groups, one group is
the staff who have direct contact with infected persons, and the other is the staff
involved in epidemic prevention and control. During the period of epidemic
prevention and control, only those who participate in epidemic prevention and control
work can receive wage subsidies. The subsidy standard for temporary work is: 50
dollars per person per day for direct contact with cases, and 30 dollars per person per
day for other medical personnel and epidemic prevention and control workers.
Moreover, according to the working hours, relative holidays can be offered to the staff
after the epidemic, so that the staff can take a rest for a period of time to alleviate the
overwork during the epidemic.
In addition, the government should guarantee the safety of the first responders.
They can provide the epidemic prevention materials to the first responders, such as
masks, gloves and chemical protective coats.
