            The story “after the race” opens with the conclusion of motor race in Dublin, Ireland. The Irish onlookers are gathered to cheer the winner of the race although none of those who have lined up for the major feat comes from Ireland. This however, does not dampen nor hinder them from cheering the finalist, as they direct their cheers to the French finalist primarily because of the fact that they -like them- are Catholics, not to mention the fact that they consider them (French people) as their natural allies. In one of these French cars they are cheering on, is one that carries four gentlemen namely; Segouin, the car’s owner;   Villona from Hungary; Andre, an electrician from French-Canadian parentage;  and Jimmy, a young Irishman.

            Jimmy who has been focused on more than the rest in the book, is a person who likes associating with the high and might within the society; something that his parent encourages him to do. His father particularly is a well-to-do Irish man who was initially an advanced nationalist and subsequently a supporter of Irish independence before he turned conservative (Michel, 1). It was only after this switching of views that his fortunes changed drastically, thereby enabling him to send Jimmy to some of the best school in the world to study, where he got acquainted to the likes of Segouin, Viola and other siblings of powerful and rich people and high members of their respective societies.
