Exercise 2: Data Interpretation

Dissolved oxygen is oxygen that is trapped in a fluid, such as water. Since most living organisms require oxygen to survive, dissolved oxygen is a necessary component of water systems such as streams, lakes, and rivers in order for them to support aquatic life. Dissolved oxygen is measured in units of ppm (parts per million).

Procedure

Examine the data in Table 3 showing the amount of dissolved oxygen present in a sample and the corresponding number of fish observed in the body of water. Then, answer the questions below.

Table 3: Dissolved Oxygen vs. Fish Population

Sample A B C D E F G H I J
Dissolved Oxygen (ppm) 0.0 5.0 4.2 7.8 6.2 3.0 10.3 12.7 8.6 12.1
Number of Fish 0 6 3 12 8 1 20 2 16 4

  1. What patterns do you observe based on the information in Table 3?

  1. Develop a hypothesis relating to the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water to the number of fish observed in the water.

  1. Outline the best experimental approach to test this hypothesis.
  2. What are your independent and dependent variables for the experiment you outlined in question 3?
  3. What type of graph would be appropriate for the data in Table 3?
  4. According to your answer in question 5, provide a graph of the data from Table 3.
  5. Does the information in the graph support your hypothesis? Why or why not?
