CSUN Presidential Debate Between John F Kennedy & Richard M Nixon Discussion On September 26, 1960 an historic event occurred. For the first time, a presidential debate would be aired on television. Until this date, these debates were either held in person or only on the radio. CBS produced this debate and it drew a then record 70 million American viewers.
This presidential debate was held between John F. Kennedy, a democratic senator from Massachusetts, and then republicanVice President Richard M. Nixon who was serving under President Dwight Eisenhower.
The power of television and non-verbal influences became apparent as those who listened to the debate on the radio gave the victory to Nixon, while those who viewed the debate on television saw Kennedy as the clear winner. To watch video click here.
After watching the one-hour debate for yourself, write a detailed essay (2 typed pages) on how the visuals of television influenced the results of the debate. Be sure to note Nixons use of inoculation effect in his opening remarks, as well as Kennedys use of the rhetorical device, anaphora, where he uses repetition to build his argument. Most importantly, address the power of non-verbal communication, attractiveness and visuals in your essay. A works cited page noting 3 sources is required for this essay.
