Crime is always a significant problem in most cities. However, the rate at which crime
occurs in some cities is higher and more worrying. In the United States, Shelby County in
Memphis has always been on the public radar due to its high crime rate. The city has been
experiencing an increase in crime rates for many years. While the rate of crime has recently been
reducing, the problem persists. Crime is a major threat to the Memphis residents and needs to be
controlled effectively.
Causes
In a society, various factors are associated with high rates of crime, which include high
levels of poverty, drug abuse, inadequate health care services, poor policies, poor education, and
lack of social ethics. In Shelby County, many factors can be attributed to the crime problem.
Among these factors is the lack of proper education. Education enables people to be productive
in society. It also provides other benefits such as creating law-abiding citizens and allowing the
people to be aware of what crime entails.
Looking at Memphis, the education level is low compared to other states. While there are
enough resources to enable better education in the region, ignorance of most of the people leads
to a lack of knowledge. As a result, people tend to be less productive and idle in society. This, in
turn, forces idle and unemployed individuals to engage in criminal activities to survive. With a
high percentage of the population being unemployed due to a lack of knowledge or education,
the rate of crime appears to be higher in the region. This is because more people view crime as
an easy way to make a living. As they indulge in criminal activities, they also influence others,
especially children, to join their activities. Children brought up in such situations, where
education is unimportant to the people, tend to lean towards crime life.
While bad influence is a major contributor to increasing crime rates, poor parenting
emerges as another big problem in the Memphis region. An individual usually begins with petty
crimes and graduates to violent and dangerous crimes as they grow and learn more criminal
tactics. Without proper care, a child can easily fall into the trap; this is what has been happening
in Memphis. The population of the region is composed of a high number of African Americans,
most of whom experience single parenthood. In Memphis, 72% of the Afro-American births and
52% of Hispanic births are said to take place out of wedlock. In most cases, the mother is usually
left to care for the child alone. Raising a child is expensive and requires a lot of keenness. While
this is expected of every parent, most of the single parents are forced to leave their children to
fend for themselves during the early stages of their lives. Some parents even depend on their
children.
Faced with tough decisions, lack of proper education, and poor parenting, abandoned
children are likely to end up in crime. A child begins by adopting bad habits such as drug abuse
and engages in petty crimes such as vandalism. As time goes by, demands increase, and the
influence of crime increases as well. Through this poor parenting style, most of the people in the
region, especially the African Americans, end up being criminals. Once one becomes a criminal,
they will be a bad influence on others and their children. The cycle keeps the crime rate high.
Poverty is also another major issue that leads to crime in Shelby County, Memphis.
Research by Brennan Center for Justice showed that reduced unemployment reduces crime rate
and the vice versa is true. With the low level of education in the region, most of the ignorant
people are unable to acquire employment. With low levels of employment, the rate of poverty
increases since people cannot be financially free. Most of the poor people have no choice but to
opt to indulge in criminal activities to make a living. They usually view this as the easiest way to
make ends meet.
Effects
Crime leads to a lot of damage to both the government and citizens. Specifically, crime in
Memphis leads to a lot of deaths, loss of property, poor development, bad influence in the
community, and a waste of resources. Murder is known as a major crime that occurs in
Memphis; violent crimes in the region often leads to gruesome murders. Besides death, increased
criminal activities in the area also open the way for other illegal activities such as rape,
vandalism, theft, aggravated assault, and domestic violence.
Solution
While crime is persistent and hard to control, there are many ways to ensure that criminal
activities are either eliminated or reduced. One of the most significant solutions is to improve
educational policies and implement the improved policies. Better policies can be enforced to
address issues concerning school attendance rates. With more children in schools, there would be
less young people who would cause problems in the streets. This is a great way of ensuring that
the number of people who may be likely involved in crime is reduced. In addition, young people
in school are more productive. They can learn to be better citizens and pursue viable courses as
well and acquire employment after school.
With a high number of employed people, crime rates can drastically reduce. This is
because individuals will be able to afford better living and can continue to support the young to
pursue better lives. Also, with increased employment, the income of most of the Memphis people
will be sustainable; hence, lead to reduced poverty levels. With low poverty, people will not find
it viable to engage in crime. In the end, the people in the region will further create positive
relations with each other and be able to help the few who are still in crime.
Besides formal employment, the state and national governments can come together to
create more jobs in the informal sector. This can support many people, especially the young, who
do not have academic qualifications. When such individuals are employed, they can give up
crime and live better lives in Memphis. The mayor of the region and other officials can make this
possible by vouching for various industries to be set up in the region to help improve
employment rates in both the formal and informal sectors.
Welfare programs can also be incorporated into the community to help support education
for the needy. Such programs can also be created to help support low-income earners start
businesses and get better lives. Along with these programs, other initiatives can be implemented
to ensure security in the region. Police officers can be employed in the region in large numbers to
track down criminals and their activities. Specific crime hotspots in the region can be targeted.
Once criminals are apprehended, they can be rehabilitated or locked down depending on the
situation of the crime.
Shelby County in Memphis is known to be a major crime region that needs to be watched
over. While there are a lot of criminal activities resulting from unemployment, poverty, and poor
parenting, among other causes, there are ways to control the crime rates. Proper policies and
programs can be implemented to ensure that criminals and criminal activities are reduced
significantly.
