Creative Project and Written Reflection #1 (20%)

Creative Project and Written Reflection #1 covers the lesson content in Weeks 8, 9, 10
and the definitions provided in Weeks 1, 2, 3
• Creative Project (10 points)
• Written Reflection (10 points)
Choose one (1) of the following documentaries/ interviews:
Week 9: Zanele Muholi in “Johannesburg” (2018). Directed by Ian Forster
Week 10: “Ka-Man Tse: Narrow Distances” (2021). Interview by Erica Cheung
Week 11: “Canada Reads 2020: Samra Habib on We Have Always Been Here”
(2020). Interview by CBC
*If you decide to read Habib’s memoir, you can use it in addition to her
interview.
Step 1: Selection
Select two (2) specific photographs or statements from the interview or documentary
that are a source of inspiration to you, and that are related to gender and/or sexuality.
• Make sure to view the definitions of gender and sexuality in Week 3.
Think about how and why the two (2) selections are a source of inspiration to you:
• Do they challenge you? Surprise you? Do you recognize something familiar in
them? Have they changed your belief or understanding about something?
• Are they in a style that is important to you?
• Are they about a theme that is important to you?
• Are there techniques used to make them that are interesting to you?
You may want to make some notes about how and why the two (2) selections are a
source of inspiration. This is something you’ll be asked to explore in the Creative Project
and the Written Reflection.

Step 2: Creation
Use the two (2) selections from the interview or documentary as a source of inspiration
for your own creative project.
• Your creative project should explore and express why and how the two (2)
selections inspire you.
• Your creative project should be in one (1) of the following media:
o A painting
o A drawing
o Mixed media/collage
o Short story or section from a memoir (2-3 pages, double-spaced)
o Two poems
o A recorded or written song
*If you would like to work in a medium not listed here, please speak to the
Professor.
• This work should be something you would feel comfortable sharing with a
public audience. For this project, the Professor is the audience.
Your creative project will be evaluated for:
• Creativity
• Originality
• Demonstrated exploration of how and why the two (2) specific photographs,
statements, or ideas from the interview or documentary are a source of
inspiration
Step 3: Written Reflection
The written reflection is an opportunity for you to discuss your creative process and the
choices you made as you created your project.
Include the following:

• Identify the two (2) specific images or statements from the interview or
documentary that are a source of inspiration to you.
• For identification, include the quotation itself or the title of the photograph.
• Cite the two (2) selections with in-text citations and include the source on a Works
Cited page in correct MLA format. A guide for doing the in-text citations and
Works Cited entry correctly is provided below.
• Explain how the two (2) selections are related to gender and/or sexuality.
• Explain how and why the two (2) selections inspire you.
• Discuss how your Creative Project responds to the two (2) selections as sources
of inspiration.
• Discuss your creative process.
• Use complete sentences, correct grammar, spelling, and vocabulary
• The length of the written reflection should be between 1 – 2 pages, 12-point font,
double-spaced.
Additional notes:
• Remember that “subject” means the person or people who are the focus of the
documentary or interview. Please use their name in your written reflection.
• Please use the gender pronouns the subject uses to identify themselves.
MLA Style format for in-text citations:
For citing something the interviewee said in a documentary streamed online:
(Director’s Last Name, time counter).
For citing something the interviewer said in a written interview:
In-text citation: (Interviewer’s Last name).

For citing something the interviewee said in a written interview:
In-text citation: (qtd. in lnterviewer’s Last Name).
For citing a photograph:
In-text citation: (Photographer’s Last Name).
*The in-text citation is placed at the end of the sentence in which information from a
source appears. The in-text citation shows the reader the original source.
MLA Style format for Works Cited entries:
Director’s Last Name, Director’s First Name. Title of Film. Film Studio/Production
Company, Year of Release. Streaming Platform.
Interviewer’s Last Name, Interviewer’s First Name. “Title of interview,” Year of
Publication. Title of Website. Accessed: Day, Month, Year.
Photographer’s Last Name, Photographer’s First Name. “Title of photograph or
series.” Year of publication. Website.
*The Works Cited entry is place on a separate page at the end of the assignment, titled
“Works Cited.” If there is more than one source, they are organized in alphabetical
order. The Works Cited entry includes all the publication information about the source.
