Final:  Convince… but with Empathy

Purpose:         In this paper you will take the values and belief systems learned in mediation and incorporate/integrate them into a position, thesis-driven essay (Convince/Case structure).  To fully demonstrate your ability to convince and persuade, you must aim towards a comprehensive understanding of all positions held on your topic—and know how to manipulate, negate, and/or integrate them in order to serve your position’s goal.

Assignment:   Write an essay arguing your topic’s position.  While you will be creating a strong case structure with a thesis to defend, you will now be incorporating the concept/construct section of the Mediation essay as you see fit.  Consider the concept section as part of your new “rebuttal.”

But do not feel confined by this model.  You may see fit to incorporate a discussion of values and beliefs held by others in your primary evidence-driven paragraphs.  Let’s not forget our courtroom models; consider the mileage you can get out of taking your opponent’s position and evidence and presenting it to your advantage.

You must have at least two reasons (and no more than 4) to defend your thesis. Remember the bulk of an effective case relies on the thorough warrant and backing that follows the reason. Please rely on the lecture/discussion we had in class about this assignment; it is a solid road map for the paper.

This essay will incorporate at least six sources, precisely documented on a Works Cited page.  Consider the variety of sources in this paper; have you invested in a good representation of journals, books, and/or electronic media of a scholarly nature? Have you moved away from mainstream/consumer periodicals and books?

Remember, you are out to convince your audience of a single position—understandably, this position may have changed over time, especially now that you’ve honestly investigated all sides and defined terms.  The material generated from the Mediation essay can, in theory, expand your argument, enlighten your audience, and elevate your credibility.

On Digication, include complementing multimodal material (photos, charts, graphs, video, audio, etc.) throughout your document. How you incorporate these modalities is part of your arrangement evaluation. There is no magic number, but zero is not recommended.

Length:           5-8 pages not including Works Cited page. In the digital portfolio this count translates to 1500 to 2400 words.

Format:           As your work is now on Digication, this last paper may be formatted to fit the digital platform as you see fit.  However, you need to represent the Works Cited page in a form similar to the MLA so your reader can discern the bibliographic information.
