COMP102 SUNY Morrisville Sound of Poems Comparison Paper I have included instructions for the essay and the 2 poems needed to be compared. I have highlighted the choice on the instructions. I need the paper done by Sunday June 16th at 4 pm. ESSAY 2 DIRECTIONS
Due: by Sunday, June 16th, at 8:00 pm.
Directions: Choose one of the options below.
Option 1: Sound
For this option, consider and compare the sound of two poems or short stories from Units 3
and/or 4. There must be a connection between your selections, and you must endeavor to reveal
that connection. You may consider but are not limited to such topics as:
?
?
?
?
?
how sound reveals something about, or influences the way we perceive, the speakers in
We Real Cool and This Is Just to Say
what influence the white space has on the way we read and understand sound in Space
what the relationship between sound and setting is in The Yellow Wallpaper and The
Tooth
where sound is used to convey tone or mood in The Young Housewife and The Black
Cat
interesting points in the work where the rhyme or rhythm shift and why in Design and
Visiting
There are, of course, more possibilities than those listed above; these are simply ideas to get you
started thinking about how sound influences and is influenced by characters, settings, and events.
Feel free to experiment here, to delve into rhythm and meter, rhyme, alliteration, and the rest.
Option 2: The First Seven Sentences
For this option, you are to analyze the first seven sentences from one of the short stories read for
Units 3 or 4. Your goal is to show how all of the information a reader needs is provided in those
first seven sentences. You must discuss the literal and the metaphorical implications of these
sentences, how they prepare us for whats to come and how they reveal information we might
not necessarily understand on a first read-through. Note that Im not looking for a plot summary
here but rather a meaningful discussion of foreshadowing, metaphor, implication, character,
setting, etc.
You should be able to discuss, for instance, why Gilman focuses on the setting so specifically at
the start of a short story that proceeds to barely mention the setting and instead focuses on
dialogue and action, or you might look at which characters are mentioned early in The Tooth
and what this implies about the relationships between the character, even how the characters see
themselves and others in this world. You may not use a short story youve already analyzed, and
remember that you are expected to say something new here: dont simply rehash what weve
already discussed.
Option 3: Consensus Reality and Madness
We term something consensus reality when its a matter of social agreement and has no place
in the world outside of this agreement. For example, the fact that you are in this class right now
COMP 102: Essay 2 Directions | Page 1 of 2
means you are taking part in a consensus reality: you believe, like many other people, that a
college education has value, that classes are worth taking, and that a diploma is a desirable
commodity to have; however, note that the entire process and the reward of the diploma at the
end is only a product of consent. Much of society works in this way: what is money except slips
of paper? Or what are words but an acceptance of their meaning? Even the fact that people want
careers, houses, and things to fill their houses with are all a matter of unspoken social
agreements: we give such ideas value simply by believing in them. What we are willing to judge
as sane and mad also works this way.
For this essay, you are to choose two characters from any unit and argue either for or against
consensus reality. You may consider but are not limited to considering:
?
?
?
Whether the young woman in The Young Housewife and the narrator of The Yellow
Wallpaper are free in the end (I leave free here for you to define).
Why the ideals of masculinity in both Cat in the Rain and Three-Legged Dog are
dangerous to both the American and the narrator and/or men and women in society. (You
might consider a similar essay about femininity as it relates to Miss Emily in A Rose
for Emily and Mrs. Vhd Vhd in The Distance of the Moon.)
How religious practice and ritualization can be harmful to people, as in The Emperor of
Ice Cream and Confession
Option 4: Your Choice
You must run your topic by me a week before the assignment is due, and you must have my
approval via email before you turn it in. Generally Im looking for you to incorporate at least two
works from this unit in a comparative analysis that brings in the concepts and terminology from
the unit lectures. Typically, I ask for a thesis statement and a brief outline of the work youll be
discussing and what youll want to say about them.
Please note failure to consult with me in advance will result in a failing grade. This requirement
is intended to protect you from trying to take on a topic too large or complicated for the time and
space you have for this assignment.
Guidelines
As with the first essay, in order to do well on this assignment (earn a grade of C or higher), you
must:
?
