2. DISCUSSION BOARD 3 1950s-1960s QUESTIONS – choose any 2 to answer in your Post:

1. Identify if there is an Interactive/Participatory onscreen host or investigator in the documentary. Does it seem like they are playing a role of some kind or being genuine? Are they tricking the subject with ambush interviews, hidden cameras or other tricks, or are they being relaxed, open and honest? Discuss if their approach is the best way to get info or if you have a problem with it. Cite a specific example or moment from the film and discuss in detail.

2. Identify if interviews are used for the documentary, and discuss if they seem to let the subject tell their own story or are being manipulated by the types of questions asked of them, the way they are asked or the way they are edited after the fact. Do you think this is a good approach or a mistake? Cite a specific example or moment from the film and discuss in detail.

3. Identify if the documentary employs a “fly on the wall” Observational approach. Discuss if it seems to be a pure document showing the truth of the subject, or if you feel some kind of manipulation going on away from the camera. Does this approach work, or is it boring? Does the filmmaker favor a character or in any way warp the reality by their filming or editing choices? Cite a specific example or moment from the film and discuss in detail.

4. Identify if you can ascertain that new technology affect the making of the documentary by allowing for low light, unobtrusive filming following a subject on location – discuss if the use of a zoom lens, mobile camera, sync sound recorder or fast film stock enhance the way the subject is covered, or make it worse. Cite a specific example or moment from the film and discuss in detail.

5. Identify if the documentary was made for TV – analyze if it is a human interest report, a history compilation or a news report. Are talking heads used too much? Are there too many clips? Could there be a better way to cover the subject? Cite a specific example or moment from the film and discuss in detail.

6. Identify if the film is Interactive – discuss if they openly admit their interactions or hide them. Analyze if the subject seems to be playing a role and manipulating the filmmaker. Cite a specific example or moment from the film and discuss in detail.
