Scientists believe that certain parasites may be one of the major causes of colony collapse disorder. Varroa mite is an example of a parasite that kills honeybees and destroys honeybee populations. Varroa mites attach themselves to honeybees, weakening and eventually killing them by slowly sucking their blood. After testing many of the colonies affected by CCD, scientists found traces of this parasite. Varroa mites also weaken honeybees’ immune systems, leaving them vulnerable to infection and disease. Scientists have also identified other microscopic parasites that interfere with the honeybee’s ability to breather and hinder its ability to fly.
