The majority of learners pursuing a business degree are likely familiar with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The WSJ has long been one of the most recognized and reputable secondary sources of business news and information, and has been in existence since 1889. Given the doctoral requirement of using scholarly sources in your writing you will not be able to cite and reference the WSJ directly, but you can use it to identify a current business issue that has not been studied in a scholarly manner, and you might find access to the WSJ data pools that WSJ has accumulated. Even with this you will need to critically scrutinize the sources and data to judge their viability for your purposes.

ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

For this learning activity, go to the Wall Street Journal Home page on Capella University Campus (linked in the Resources). Examine the content about what Capella business learners have available via the WSJ partnership. If you have not done so yet, create your WSJ account (there is material on Campus to help do that). Access WSJ.com through your account, and review the layout and content of the information available on a daily basis.

For your initial discussion post, briefly summarize what you found that might be considered scholarly, or a potential business topic option for your future dissertation. Describe how the information you found might help you during your doctoral work.

RESPONSE GUIDELINES

Review and reply to at least two other learners’ posts, asking questions about each learner’s findings. Offer at least one additional suggestion about how business information that is available from the WSJ might or might not be beneficial to that learner as a researcher and scholar.
