Biomedical Model of Health and Illness
The biomedical model emerged in 1878 through the research conducted by Louis Pasteur. He identified that diseases were caused germs that infected the human body organs. This realization acted as the founding model to other advanced means of identifying the cause of diseases which are present today. Germov (2009) states that the biomedical model is based on the assumption that each disease or ailment has a specific cause that physically affects the human body in a uniform and predictable way, meaning that universal cures for people are theoretically possible. This model eliminated previous beliefs that linked diseases to religious perceptions such as the presence of evil spirits, penance and sin. Although the model has been greatly helpful in identifying the causes and cures many diseases in the biomedical arena, a number of criticisms emerging from the psychological and sociological arena have been presented relating to the same.
